My favorite read in 2023…

Book cover of Wool

Nathan Abrams Why did I love this book?

I chose this book because I watched the Apple TV series adaptation of it called Silo. It is a post-apocalyptic thriller set inside an underground bunker (the silo of the title).

Why were they there? What was really happening outside? What was the origin of the silo’s strange rules? As the show was so thought-provoking, raising so many questions, I decided to turn to the source material.

And I wasn’t disappointed because Howey’s worldbuilding reminded me of that done by Frank Herbert so memorably in Dune. And the great thing is, Wool is long and is followed by another three books…

SOON TO BE A MAJOR APPLE TV SERIES

'Thrilling, thought-provoking and memorable ... one of dystopian fiction's masterpieces alongside the likes of 1984 and Brave New World.' DAILY EXPRESS

In a ruined and hostile landscape, in a future few have been unlucky enough to survive, a community exists in a giant underground silo.

Inside, men and women live an enclosed life full of rules and regulations, of secrets and lies.

To live, you must follow the rules. But some don't. These are the dangerous ones; these are the people who dare to hope and dream, and who infect others…

My 2nd favorite read in 2023…

Book cover of The Twist of a Knife

Nathan Abrams Why did I love this book?

I love this author’s adult work, especially his Atticus Pünd mysteries, in which he inserts a book within a book. The Twist of a Knife is a good old-fashioned crime/detective mystery in which the main character is a semi-fictionalized version of the author who teams up with an enigmatic detective to solve crimes in London.

Not only are many of the settings familiar to me, but Horowitz also loves wordplay and puns, and often anagrams provide clues to unravel the mystery.

It is the fourth in a series and I am excited to learn that a new one is on the way shortly.

By Anthony Horowitz,

What is this book about?

By global bestselling Anthony Horowitz, a brilliantly entertaining new locked-room mystery with a key that only Hawthorne can find.

'EASILY THE GREATEST OF OUR CRIME WRITERS' SUNDAY TIMES

'Funny, addictive and clever, and the crime fighting duo of Hawthorne and Horowitz are as entertaining as ever. Brilliant. I can't wait for more.' ADAM HANDY

''There's a lovely Hitchcockian feel to TWIST. The clock is ticking. It's a lot of fun.' IAN RANKIN

'The Twist of a Knife is a beautifully turned locked-room whodunit' THE SUNDAY TELEGRAPH

'A total joy. Anthony is a master entertainer, the genius twists and turns of…

My 3rd favorite read in 2023…

Book cover of The Enigma of Room 622

Nathan Abrams Why did I love this book?

Joël Dicker is another author I am a fan of, having followed his career since his debut, The Truth About the Harry Quebert Affair.

Like my second recommendation, it features the author as a semi-fictionalized character in the book. The setting of the novel is a grand hotel in the Swiss Alps and revolves around another mystery with multiple timelines as the narrative shifts back and forth.

The writing is concise, spare even, and comes to a very satisfying ending by the time of the book’s conclusion.

By Joël Dicker, Robert Bononno (translator),

Why should I read it?

1 author picked The Enigma of Room 622 as one of their favorite books, and they share why you should read it.

What is this book about?

A burnt-out thriller writer desperate to regain his creative spark becomes intrigued by a decade-old unsolved murder at a glamorous Alpine hotel in this meticulously crafted novel-a matryoshka doll of a mystery built with the precision of a Swiss watch-from the internationally bestselling author of The Truth About the Harry Quebert Affair.

One December night, a corpse is found in Room 622 of the Hotel Verbier, a luxury resort in the Swiss Alps. An intense police investigation begins, yet few leads are found. Time passes, and without any breaks in the case, public interest wanes.

Years later, Joel Dicker, Switzerland's…

Kubrick: An Odyssey

By Robert Kolker, Nathan Abrams,

Book cover of Kubrick: An Odyssey

What is my book about?

An in-depth biography of one of the 20th century’s great artists. We explore Kubrick’s beginnings as a photographer through his controversial last film, Eyes Wide Shut, concentrating on his domestic and working life to disprove the myth of Kubrick the mad recluse, revealing instead an artist dedicated to every detail of the making of his films.

This dedication resulted in slow, deliberate research and pre-production. The actual process of making a film was equally deliberate. Kubrick took all the time he needed; he pushed his actors to the limit to get the performance he needed. He pushed himself mercilessly. But he was also a loving father, husband, son, brother, grandfather, uncle and friend.
