Book cover of Sherlock Holmes and the Rune Stone Mystery

Sybil Johnson Why did I love this book?

When I first heard about the Sherlock Holmes in Minnesota series, I was not only intrigued, but also curious to see how Holmes and Watson would do in a very different environment. I have to say they did very well.

I enjoyed this book partly because I like stories featuring Holmes and partly because it weaves a fictional mystery around a real event, the discovery of a rune stone in a field in Minnesota in the late 1800s. I’ve been to the museum dedicated to the Kensington Rune Stone and read about the controversy.

It was interesting to see how the author married fiction with reality. It was a fun read that I think most Sherlock fans will enjoy.

My 2nd favorite read in 2023…

Book cover of Charlie Thorne and the Last Equation

Sybil Johnson Why did I love this book?

Charlie Thorne is a girl genius, a code breaker, and a thief. In this middle grade book, she must use her unique skills to find a dangerous equation devised by Einstein before it falls into the wrong hands.

I read a lot of middle grade books. There are a lot of great stories aimed at this audience that adults can also enjoy. This is a particularly good one, an action-packed adventure from start to finish. I was rooting for Charlie from the very beginning. It was also nice to see a girl being the smartest one in the room.

I’m looking forward to reading the other books in the series.

My 3rd favorite read in 2023…

Book cover of The Vampire Book Club

Sybil Johnson Why did I love this book?

I’m not a huge paranormal mystery fan, but I read them if they’re full of likable characters and interesting situations. This book is one of those.

The book features Quinn Callahan, a witch banished to Ireland after she breaks a major rule of magic. She starts a new life in a place full of witches and vampires where she knows no one. I can relate to a certain extent. I wasn’t exiled, but I did move 1200 miles from home to go to college in a place where I knew no one.

I like how the vampires in the book club she’s “inherited” team up with Quinn to solve a murder when she discovers a body in the book store she runs. I found this an enjoyable, fast-paced read.
