The best funny and faith-based romances

Why am I passionate about this?

When I used to pick up my youngest from elementary school, instead of asking about her day, I’d say, “Tell me your stories.” Her stories always ended with, “And in my head I said…” After laughing at all her unspoken responses, I finally started to tease, “You’re really funny in your head.” That’s me too. She and I see the world as a cartoon for entertainment. I don’t have the comedic timing to say my funny thoughts aloud, but they transfer well to paper where I can share them with readers. And I still look for stories from people who are funny in their head.

What is my book about?

When Meri Newberg becomes the last of her friends to remain single, she jokingly gets passed a list of ways to find a husband from the 1950s. Cameraman and confirmed bachelor, Kai Kamaka, convinces her to try out the list for a new internet show to help him make a name for himself. She follows the antiquated advice—from pretending to trip when she enters a room to pretending to drown in a pool, and they have an instant hit on their hands. But what happens when Meri starts to enjoy her time with Kai more than the men he helps her lasso on street corners?

Angela Ruth Strong Why did I love this book?

I laughed and cried my way through this book, and even though it’s a romance, I didn’t know how it would end. Lauren agreed not to date for two years in order to adopt a child, but as her dream of motherhood is about to come true, she meets Joshua. Joshua is one of my favorite heroes ever—sweet and funny and completely irresistible. It broke my heart to put myself in Lauren’s shoes, but it was so worth it in the end.

Angela Ruth Strong Why did I love this book?

My sister recommended this book to me, and I’ve recommended it multiple times since. More than once, I’ve read the prologue out loud to another person and couldn’t keep from crying. Just from the prologue, people. I’m tellin’ ya. Anyway, Kate accompanies her grandmother to renovate her childhood home with the assistance of a bunch of geriatric busybodies and one hunky hockey player. Matt quit playing hockey to take care of his wife when she was diagnosed with cancer, then when she died, he gave up on everything he loved. Kate is a social worker who wants to help him find healing, but she never expects it to break her heart in the process.

Book cover of Then There Was You

Angela Ruth Strong Why did I love this book?

I’m a sucker for a great ending, and this book offers the best. Though the beginning is pretty great, as well. Paige is a fish out of water when she heads from Chicago to Sydney, Australia to work for a mega-church even though she’s become jaded against organized religion. She doesn’t realize the guy she’s instantly attracted to on the flight overseas is the pastor’s son. To make things worse, Josh has an ex who abused alcohol, so when Paige barfs on his shoes, he suspects she’s inebriated even though she’s simply airsick. When forced to work together, they assume the worst of each other in spite of grudging respect and growing attraction. These characters are absolutely enjoyable, though be prepared to go through some tough stuff with them too.

This is not your average romance novel. Aspiring screenwriter Olivia runs into an aspiring actor one February 3, and they make a pact to meet back up at the same coffee shop ten years later to encourage each other’s success. The book spans those ten years, but we only read about what happens on each February 3rd when many whimsical coincidences conspire to connect Olivia’s love life to her mystery man. This unique narrative is filled with both wit and grit, and I couldn’t get enough of it.

Book cover of Book Nerds and Boyfriends

Angela Ruth Strong Why did I love this book?

This book is actually a novella collection of three romances, so…bonus! Sarah Monzon writes some of the best chemistry, and she’s written in a few different genres, but I love this one best because of the humor. And because of Book Nerds!!! I related a little too well to the author character who locked herself in the trunk of a car for research. Thankfully, my friend didn’t get pulled over by a cute police officer with me in the trunk, but still. This trilogy is so fun, and this author is one you’ll want to watch.
