The best books that give kids beautiful nightmares

Why am I passionate about this?

As a middle grade horror writer, I attribute my love of everything spooky to my early obsession with reading. Of course, my little brain was twisted already, but I found a perfect home in the monsters and ghouls of the library. These are the five books that inspired me to become a writer who scares children in the best possible way.

What is my book about?

Marius Grey hunts Monsters. He's not supposed to. He's only twelve and his job as a Cemetery Boy is to look after the ghosts in his family's graveyard. He should be tending these ghosts and—of course—going to school to learn how to live between worlds without getting into trouble. But Marius has an expensive goal. He wants to bring his mother back from the dead, and that takes a lot of mystic coins, which means a lot of Monster Hunting, and his mother’s window to return is closing.

If he wants her back, Marius is going to have to go after bigger and meaner monsters, decide if a certain flesh-eating mermaid is a friend or foe, and avoid meddling Demons and teachers along the way.

The books I picked & why

Book cover of Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark

M.R. Fournet Why did I love this book?

This series was the most banned in the 1990s, or as my niece calls it, “the nineteen hundreds,” because she likes to make me feel old.

They are a beautiful, horrifying collection of spooky folktales and urban myths. Each one carefully researched and wonderfully written by Alvin Schwartz. The books were checked out so many times from the library their spines split. If the stories don’t make you wet the bed, the amazing illustrations by Stephen Gammell will.

What is this book about?

Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark is a classic collection of chillingly scary tales, in which Alvin Schwartz offers up some of the most alarming tales of horror, dark revenge, and supernatural events of all time, complemented in this paperback edition by spine-tingling illustrations by renowned artist Brett Helquist. Walking corpses, dancing bones, knife-wielding madmen, and narrow escapes from death-they're all here in this chilling collection of ghost stories. Make sure you read these books with the light ON!

Book cover of The Graveyard Book

M.R. Fournet Why did I love this book?

The perfect teen horror book doesn’t exist…oh wait, yes it does. Unlike the others, I read this as an adult, but wow! This was a huge influence on my horror book, with its scenes of living in a cemetery.

Gaiman paints certain evil things as beautiful and worthy of redemption, and I appreciate that. A murderer on the loose, a boy living in a cemetery with ghosts, and all manner of monsters lurking in the pages. It’s a gorgeous book and deserves that Newberry Medal on the cover.

A stunningly original novel deftly constructed over eight chapters, featuring every second year of Bod's life, from babyhood to adolescence. Will Bod survive to be a man?

Book cover of The New Girl

M.R. Fournet Why did I love this book?

These fall more in the young adult world rather than middle grade because of the sexual situations. With that being said, I totally devoured them in middle school.

In my opinion, there is no greater master of the end of chapter cliffhanger than R.L. Stine, which keeps you frantically turning the page waaaaay after lights out. I carried these books around with me in my grandmother’s huge makeup case like my spooky book security blanket. And yes, my family was concerned.

Book cover of The Dollhouse Murders

M.R. Fournet Why did I love this book?

I don’t want to blame Ms. Wright for my aversion to freaky dolls, but yeah, she didn’t help. When I read the book as a kid, it just affirmed my theory that all dolls come alive at night and do twisted things.

It’s extremely well-written and appropriately spooky. Not only that, but I met this author. She came to my elementary school and spoke to us. Much to my surprise, she was a sweet, normal, real-life person. I figured if she could give my classmates nightmares, surely, I could too.

Book cover of Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of Nimh

M.R. Fournet Why did I love this book?

Another Newberry Medal winner, this book is unlike the rest because the terror doesn’t come from the supernatural. It’s from the cruelty of mankind and scientific testing on animals.

What I love about this book, and the movie made in the “nineteen hundreds”, is it respected the readers. It told us a frightening story and trusted us to be able to process it. Like all the books on this list, the authors didn’t treat us like kids. They treated us like readers, and that’s the best thing a writer can do for their fans.

Why am I passionate about this?

I’m an Australian USA Today bestselling romance author who writes contemporary romance and uses the pen name Alyssa James to write medieval romance. I think the makeover trope resonates with me because although I’m no beauty queen now, I was definitely an ugly duckling in my teens. For reasons best known to him, my father insisted on close-cropped hair, and financial circumstances dictated out-of-style hand-me-down clothing. After university, I found my own style, but it wasn’t until I was accepted as an international flight attendant that I believed that I couldn’t be all that ugly if Qantas employed me!
