There is a world. There are two-legged walking, talking dogs. There is a robot, designed to look like a two-legged walking, talking dog (she’s a teenager), that has won all the high school athletics. Which did not sit well with an alumnus who had held all the records from the same high school for years. The older dog (Jefferson) hates the younger dog (Jody), who "stole" her records. This is established at the beginning.
Both are heroes. They defend their world. Jody has been programmed to be good, kind, compassionate, and have high standards. Jefferson – hum – she is not particularly nice. Even so, this is a story of good overcoming evil. The evil ones are Remus, The Twenty-Third, King “of a little plot of land way out there in the farthest regions of space,” and Fleab, the “Grand Master of all Ninja Lizards.”
There is deceit, sneekiness, meanness, violence, and finally, resolution and acceptance. Jody and Jefferson get caught, and they escape in a most unusual way (or maybe not if you think hard about it). They rescue their pals and … Well, read the story for the rest.
