Purchase options and add-ons
The definitive guide to navigating divorce in today’s world from one of America’s top matrimonial lawyers.
Marriage as we know it in America has changed—and so, too, has divorce. Women are outearning men. Fathers are winning custody battles. Same-sex marriage is law. In this remarkably insightful and clear guide, elite New York City divorce attorney Jacqueline Newman shares her secrets from over two decades in the trenches. This book will help you:
-Decide whether you are actually ready to get a divorce
-Protect your finances and understand division of assets
-Find the right lawyer for your situation
-Win the child custody schedule you want
-Heal and stay sane in the midst of a disorienting time
Over the course of her career, Newman has implemented her strategies and coached her clients round the clock on how to navigate every aspect of their divorces. Now, in this landmark book, she offers the same tools and tactics to you. Newman also shines a light on the divorce industry where specialists of the trade financially benefit from drawn-out, high conflict cases. “Divorce,” she says, “can be simple, even if it is not amicable.”
Filled with hard-earned wisdom and a touch of humor, The New Rules of Divorce is an essential read for anyone looking to emerge from their breakup stronger, happier, and secure.

I found this book to be a helpful, refreshing and insightful read. Right off Ms. Newman states that perhaps a divorce is not the answer; that her book does not replace meeting with an attorney, and that she dispenses no BS. (Aside: Author sometimes uses salty language for emphasis.)
This book’s stated goal is to help the reader end a marriage humanely and economically. It does this in twelve chapters which are each called “Secrets”. The book’s beginning is succinct yet very thorough in covering the self-examination, self-care, financial and documentation questions which arise when one is contemplating a divorce.
The book lives up to its title of “New Rules” as Ms. Newman frequently interweaves historical fact (with citations) and her legal experiences when it comes to marriage and divorce. She reviews how times and court rulings have changed over the past several years.
Early chapters include information on how to choose an attorney and differences between mediation, litigation and collaborative law models. Later chapters cover child support, custody and financial issues, and negotiation money formulas. Timing and living single are also addressed. At 250 pages, ‘The New Rules of Divorce’ is digestible yet comprehensive in its coverage of the topic.
I have no reservations in recommending this book. I think that it is just what my friend is looking for. And although this book is aimed at more affluent couples, anyone contemplating divorce would value from reading it.
Divorce can be messy, expensive, and so scary! This book is like a roadmap for everything you could possibly deal with, along with support. Jacqueline Newman is a successful New York lawyer, and while there are a few things that vary by state, the advice here knows no bounds. The tone is no-nonsense, but extremely helpful. Want a lawyer like her? She gives you advice on how to find one as well.
What I also really appreciated about Newman’s down-to-earth writing was that she was straight-up and honest to her approaches. As I mentioned before, I wish I had had this book before or during my divorce process as I made mistakes, and I think this book would have helped me save money. I honor that Newman gives us inside knowledge about judges, lawyers, and the court in general. Her writing style is easy to follow and even entertaining. Newman really understands divorce and it shows. I also acknowledge and appreciate that Newman is an experienced divorce lawyer who tells it like it is. I highly recommend this book for those considering divorce and recommend reading it before contacting a lawyer.
