Plot Twist Kindle Edition

An aspiring screenwriter has a chance encounter with an actor who could be the man of her dreams. Over the next ten years, she’ll write the story . . . but will he end up being the star?

February 4, 2003, promises to be a typical day for Olivia Ross—a greeting card writer whose passion project is a screenplay of her own. But after she and a handsome actor have a magical meet-cute in a coffee shop, they make a spontaneous pact: in ten years, after they’ve found the success they’re just sure they’re going to achieve, they’ll return to the coffeehouse to partner up and make a film together. The only problem? Olivia neglected to get the stranger’s name. But she doesn’t forget his face—or the date.

For the next ten years, every February 4 is marked with coincidences and ironies for Olivia. As men come and go and return to her life, she continues to write, but still wonders about the guy from the coffee shop—the nameless actor she’s almost certain has turned out to be Hamish MacDougal, now a famous A-lister and Hollywood leading man.

But a lot can happen in ten years, and while waiting for the curtain to rise on her fate, the true story of Olivia’s life is being written—and if she’s not careful, she’ll completely miss the real-life romantic comedy playing out right before her eyes.

Fun Book but Not Really a Christian Book

Fun Book but Not Really a Christian Book
I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review, courtesy of NetGalley and Thomas Nelson.Overall ImpressionThis was a quick read for me (I had trouble putting it down), but one that left me with mixed feelings, as I didn’t understand why it was labeled as Christian fiction.Things I likedThe StructureI really enjoyed the book’s unconventional structure. Based on the synopsis, I thought the novel would be a standard romance story, so the unexpected structure was a pleasant surprise. The structure also contributed to the novel’s pacing. I liked how each chapter introduced lots of new information, so the book didn’t have the normal “slow parts.”The PlotThe plot really pulled me in, to the extent that I felt an emotional connection to the characters. There were definitely moment when I wanted to punch Olivia or became angry with Liam, and it’s been a while since a book elicited that kind of response from me.Along a similar line, I noticed other readers saying that this book would make a great movie, and I agree. I liked that it was slightly cleaner than your typical PG-13 rom-com (though it didn’t quite feel PG) but was not predictable like a Hallmark story. In fact, there were several fun plot twists. The HumorThe book was both fun and funny, and I found myself laughing out loud. The SettingThe book took place from the time I was in 2nd grade until I graduated from high school. Because the main character is an adult, there were some references that I couldn’t fully understand, but there were also quite a few that I enjoyed.Spiritual ContentAs I read, I kept thinking that the spiritual themes were coming up a little later on. Given the premise of the novel and the occasional nods to “coincidence,” I was thinking there would be, at the least, discussion about God’s planning. But there wasn’t. In fact, there was no content even alluding to faith or relationship with God.While some Christian books present subtle, allegorical meaning and others offer nods to religious practices like church attendance (which is not my favorite “Christian book” identifier), I really saw no reason to call this a Christian book. It was comparatively “clean” (please see Content notes), but it was not what I expected.Content ConcernsIn contrast, there were some “worldly” elements. Most of these things will seem pretty “nitpicky.” However, I am reviewing not only as a Christian reviewer, but also in the context that this book is considered a Christian book. For me, these elements felt out of place in a Christian book.Olivia is very impressed that her best friend, Fiona, has celebrities’ phone numbers in their phone and thinks “a friend like that deserved better.” While I think the line is meant to be comedic, I feel that it subtly endorses celebrity worship. There’s also a reference to the “sanctity” of a singer.Olivia and Fi have a really sweet lifelong friendship, which I really enjoyed reading. I didn’t like the line that described Fiona as the love of her life. It was just like but it weirded me out!At least one use of the Lord’s name in vain (“Geez”).One of the main characters is referred to as “Sexy Irish Guy.”Romantic ContentI think most people would comfortably describe this as a “clean” read. There were, however, quite a few passionate kissing scenes. The descriptions were enough to make me feel uncomfortable, although this definitely wasn’t the worst I’ve seen. Compared to mainstream novels, I’m sure this is a very clean read. Because this is a Christian novel, I would have liked to see a more innocent romance.Concluding ThoughtsWhile undoubtedly an entertaining read, this isn’t a book I would characterize as Christian. Therefore, it’s not something I would endorse as “here’s a good, pure [as in purity] work of fiction.” I don’t read much adult fiction, but this is probably a good alternative to mainstream choices.

The structure of this story was fresh and fun, each chapter written in one-year increments of the initial meet cute… with the promised “meet me here again in ten years”.

With Bethany Turner’s signature nods to pop culture, I loved following Olivia’s quick-witted journey, in her head and through the dialogue, as she navigates the ups, downs, and all-arounds of her choices in life and love—all winding toward that final plot twist. You go, Olivia!

Pros:
-Different/Unique (the same meet cutes and tropes get really old after a while)
-Intriguing storyline keeps interest
-Fun references to pop culture
-Not too spicy (the focus is the plot)
-Nothing too heavy
-Endearing male lead
-Excellent ending

Cons:
-The main character never really being honest/saying what she wants to say, resulting in problems/unhappiness, gets super annoying
-The relationship the FMC has with her best friend is a bit strange - the way they treat each other at times isn't so great, and the devotion the FMC has to her is a bit odd
-The writing itself was a bit subpar at times; I often found myself skimming
-Not having an epilogue was disappointing

I kept trying to get into this book but never fully did.
One thing I disliked quite a lot was when there was a conversation or scene happening and there was a ton of internal conflict/conversation happening. It took away from the moment and never added anything. I ended up skipping most of them so I could read how the scene ended before I forgot what it was about.

Spoiler part:
I did not like that there were two kisses that were cheating. It did feel realistic and matches the story and both times the people were honest with their partners right away and resolved it. But it made me uncomfortable and I had to stop reading for a bit after each one.

Plot Twist is a cute, clean story involving an aspiring screenwriter who makes a pact with an aspiring actor that she met at a coffee shop. In 10 years they would reconnect at the same coffee shop and the actor would star in Olivia's screenplay that she would complete.
Throughout the 10 years that progressed, we see Olivia 's friendship with Fiona and the many ups and down in Olivia's life both romantically and personally. Of course, with Plot Twist as the title, this novel definitely has some twists and turns and plot twists that I didn't expect.

I only give it a four star because the writer is very talented and the story was cleverly written. It held my interest much as a train wreck. Fiona was a terrific character and very likable. Her friendship with Olivia, the main character, was one of the great stories of the book. The mystery of what would happen with Hamish every February 4th held one’s interest through all the melancholy. There was little humor in the book. “Handsome Irish guy” was also likable but I can’t think of any other characters in the book I liked. I didn’t believe the love story of Liam and Olivia and kept hoping she or he would brake away for good. I usually read or listen to books I really like multiple times but this will not be one.

I read a lot of romances and magical books, mostly because as a person living with the suckiness of chronic illness I hate reading anything with sadness and tragedy, and I can’t handle reading about abuse of any kind and I read enough murder mysteries in my young adulthood to last a lifetime. This book was so unique. The time jumps, the clandestine plot device of the deal she made on the first day, one of the best openings scenes I’ve ever read, and one of the most real, sweetest, and most vulnerable leading men of any book I think I’ve read. I usually get annoyed with prolonged push-pull, near-misses of romance, but this story, even though, over 10 years, felt like the kind of story of real hearts not knowing what they really want. It was a ten-year long lifetime odyssey, of characters taking time to heal insecurities, care for others’ feelings, nurture friendship and relationships, and grow. I want to read ten more years, please.

I loved this book. If you like love and happy endings and a bit of a twist, it’s a great read. It’s easy and you don’t want to put it down. I love the creativity of having every chapter be the same day, just a different year. Great vacation book!

The only romantic scene is the date with Liam, then she breaks up with him. Because she thinks he’s too good for her. A subject that is never explored. Or she grows from. The author has to tell us he’s the love of her life throughout the story instead of scenes where this is clear. He tells her he loves her the Dates her best friend???? And she lies to her best friend over and over instead of telling her the truth. Olivia's character seems bored with her life, her job , her script. She goes to Italy for a year WHY!!! There’s no transformation she comes home more depressed. (I’ll skip some). When she has the chance for a heart to heart confession with Liam she makes out with him then doesn’t have her come to Jesus moment by telling the truth for once. But some how magically he comes to her at the very end and she loves him the end. So disappointing, no epilogue on the next 4th showing us they’re good. Just a sad unromantic mess of thing’s going on in this book and characters no one cares about having more of a moment than the lead couple.
