A delightfully warm, encouraging story of a young girl and the special library dog who helps her develop patience, acceptance, and confidence as she learns to read, from award-winning author-illustrator Lisa Papp.

Madeline Finn does NOT like to read. But she DOES want a gold star from her teacher. Except stars are for good readers, for understanding words, and for saying them out loud—things that Madeline Finn doesn't believe she can do.

Fortunately, Madeline Finn finds a little help when she meets Bonnie, a library dog. Reading out loud to Bonnie isn't so bad, and when Madeline Finn gets stuck, Bonnie doesn't mind. As it turns out, it's fun to read when you're not afraid of making mistakes. Bonnie teaches Madeline Finn that it's okay to go slow—and, most importantly, to keep trying.

Lisa Papp offers an inspiring and comforting story, perfect for new readers who just need a little confidence to overcome their fears.

About the Author

Lisa Papp grew up telling stories. With a notebook full of sketches, her early tales featured her cat, stuffed animals, and other nature-y things. Today, Lisa is still making up stories and painting pictures, only now, they fill the pages of children's books. She has received awards for both her writing and illustration, including a 2011 NAPPA Honor Award, 2012 Storytelling Award, and the 2013 PA Keystone to Reading Award. Lisa lives in Pennsylvania, with her husband, Robert, also an artist, and three wildly creative cats—to whom she does read.

Lisa Papp was inspired by her local library's "Read-to-Dogs" program. "These former shelter dogs are now spending their lives helping children. It's a beautiful thing to watch." Many of the dogs featured in the book were once living a life on the streets or in shelters. Lisa spent the better part of a year following these wonderful dogs and their dedicated owners. "What a gift they are to our communities, I hope this story brings light to these beautiful programs." Madeline Finn and the Library Dog has raised money for local animal groups and Lisa hopes that will continue. "It's a privilege to share this book with children and share the stories of these wonderful therapy dog teams."

Lisa Papp enjoys bringing characters to life, both in words and pictures. MADELINE FINN AND THE LIBRARY DOG, which she wrote and illustrated, won the 2017 Children's Choice Book of the Year Award, received a Parent's Choice Recommended Award, and has been translated into 22 languages. THE TOWN THAT FOOLED THE BRITISH - A WAR OF 1812 STORY, written by Lisa and illustrated by her husband, Robert, was a 2011 National Parenting Publications Award (NAPPA) Honor Winner, and a 2012 Storytelling Award Winner.

Another wonderful book related to therapy dogs and their helpful ways for children to enjoy reading

Very sweet story! Reassuring for my granddaughter who was slow to learn to read. Well written and pictures are VERY NICE. I knew she could not read it by herself, but her mom read it to her and she loved it.

Not everyone is comfortable reading, much less reading aloud in a classroom.

This book is a story of a student who struggles. Madeline wants a Star sticker; not another Keep Trying sticker. She is feeling that she won't ever be able to reach the goals set by the teacher. Until she meets a library dog who patiently waits for her to sound out words, doesn't laugh when she makes a mistake and just breathes calmly side by side.

We checked this book out of the library and enjoyed it enough to purchase for multiple households with readers of all abilities.

I have used this book with good results for both preschool and elementary children. The younger children identify with Madeline's emotions while the school age children responded to the frustration and struggles of learning to read aloud. Everyone loved the quiet help Madeline received from the library dog. We too have a library dog who listens as children read. This book was useful in promoting our Barking Buddies Summer Reading Program.

Madeline reminds me of me when I was 9. I struggled to read. I wished there were therapy dogs back then. My dog is a certified therapy dog through Pet Partners Read with Me™ Program. Kids read to him twice a month a the library. I wish every library had a therapy dog to help kids get over reading anxiety.

Poignant and well written book. Madeline doesn't like to read, especially aloud, because it takes her extra time to figure out words. She is unhappy and her mother is concerned. A helpful librarian teams Madeline up with a big furry white dog to read to each week who is patient, loyal, and noncritical. They make a good team and, eventually, Madeline gains in confidence and performance. The relatable emotion in both writing and wonderful illustrations really adds. I'm the grandmother of a Madeline and love this book. A. enjoyed listening to it too.

What a wonderful book about a little girl and the library therapy dog who helps her learn to read. Mostly Bonnie, the patient and attentive dog, helps Madeline Finn find her courage. I am working with my second therapy dog and was thrilled to find this book to have the kids read to him. And the illustrations are simply captivating. Thank you, fellow Bucks Countian, for this jewel.

5.0 out of 5 stars TOTALLY GORGEOUS BOOK; This author deserves to be better known
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 3, 2019
I thought for a while about buying this for a friend's child who loves dogs, it has proved a great hit! I read it too (of course) and I have to admit that I had a tear in my eye at the gently happy ending. The illustrations are so beautiful and the spareness of the text is perfect. Each word seems to have more weight and be so considered; less is most definitely more here. The illustrations capture the character of the little girl, the way she is uncertain at times and the gentleness of the dog are so well conveyed. We found much to look at in the details of the drawings, all the dogs and children are different and so well drawn, we enjoyed looking at them and on subsequent reads through found much to explore. The story is simply heartwarming and highlights how difficult school can sometimes be even though the teachers may be kind. Madeline struggles and finds a way through helped by the kindness of a forward thinking Librarian who employs the gentle acceptance of dogs to help the children find confidence. I have looked for any other books by this author and found another; Madeline Finn and The Shelter Dog, so have ordered this too. They are now on my favourites list for illustrated stories along with The Very Best Sheepdog by Pinny Grylls and Rosie Wellesley and We're Going on a Bear Hunt by Michael Rosen and Helen Oxenbury. I really hope that Lisa Papp continues to do more books, we look forward to them.
