About the authors
Living on the beautiful Devon Coastline, Kate melds her lifelong love of reading Cozy Sleuths with her love of writing and years of living in foreign climes to write Travel Cozies. Devon is such a friendly place living here is like living in a time warp. The strong sense of community takes Kate back in spirit to the Glasgow of her childhood - and that's how Màiri was born!
Màiri is a Scots Irish teacher whose home is Glasgow as it was in the 1970s, a time and place Kate recalls fondly. Passionate about Accessibility, Kate insists that all her writing is published in Large Print and Dyslexia Friendly editions, in addition to standard print, eBooks and audiobooks.
Jessica Brimer is a Tennessee native who spends most of her time writing and far more time browsing the bookshelves at her local library. Growing up Jessica was fascinated with the mystery genre, which sparked her desire to write them. If she isn't spending time with her two kids and husband, you can almost always find her dabbling with essential oils while reading something mysterious.
Jessica Thompson is the author of the Amazon best-selling mystery novels “A Caterer’s Guide to Holidays and Homicide” and “A Caterer’s Guide to Love and Murder" which was a finalist in the Wishing Shelf Awards. She also curated and featured her own short stories in a family friendly anthology of campfire stories, "Beyond the Woods: A Supernatural Anthology." Active in her local writing community, she volunteers as the Assistant Communications Chair for the Storymakers Guild and as a Program Assistant for the Writer’s League of Texas.
Jessica lives in the suburbs of Austin, Texas with her husband and two children. When not writing, she’s getting her boots dirty at her parents' nearby longhorn cattle ranch. Whether ranching, cooking, or gardening, she sees it all as plot-inspiring material for her next mystery.
J.R. Lancaster is a published author and journalist as well as CEO of Musings & Company Creative Agency. She lives in the Midwest with her husband and children. J.R. is a graduate of Southern New Hampshire University and possesses an MFA in Creative Writing and Teaching Degree in English. She has a passion for writing that is only rivaled by her love of reading. In her spare time, you can find her outside with her family or behind the pages of a book.

I enjoyed this collection very much and there are many different cozy writing styles, plotlines, and characters to admire. Proceeds from this book go to the RAICEStexas.org charity. Support a great cause, a fun read for fans of cozy mystery!
All the stories contain an amateur sleuth who reluctantly or quite happily tries to solve a crime the police cannot. Small towns are also typically involved which I always enjoy reading about. I grew up and currently live in a small town and can completely relate to the atmosphere. I was disappointed that laughter seemed to be missing from the short stories. This is typically a reason that I read cozy mysteries but none of the stories had this included. The stories were all very different and one ended quite abruptly. Otherwise the book was a nice change of pace and I enjoyed all of the short stories. The recipes at the end of the book were a great added bonus. I always enjoy this when included in the cozy mysteries.
With this book being written by ten different authors it’s a great way to read books by new authors. It is also nice with having these books be so short that you can read a book easily within 20-30 minutes at night. From the first story to the last, they are enjoyable and quick reads.
Edited by Kate Darroch and Jessica Thompson
LUCK OF THE IRISH is an anthology comprised of ten short stories all with the theme of St. Patrick's Day and luck. The stories are varied; two are historical, Gilded Age and 1960s, and all have different locales including Tennessee and outer space! All of the proceeds of this anthology go to the non-profit RAICEStexas.org who help immigrant, refugee, and asylum seeking families, especially the children.
With such a diverse group of stories, it's only logical that some I liked and some I didn't care for as much. I really enjoyed "A Caterer's Guide to Leprechauns and Lies" by Jessica Thompson, "A Tale of Fickle Fortune" by Amy Grundy, and "A Foliage Farewell" by J. R. Lancaster, even though the protagonist deems it unthinkable to have a litter box in the house and lets his cat outside. My favorite story by far, was "A Fatal St. Patrick's Day" by Kathleen Marple Kalb that featured characters from her Ella Shane Mystery series. This historical series is one of my favorites and this short story ably captures the personality of the characters as they solve another mystery in Gilded Age New York City. I also really appreciated the recipes included at the end of the book.
If you're in mind of a quick read with a St. Patrick's Day bent and want to help a charity as well, LUCK OF THE IRISH COZY MYSTERY ANTHOLOGY might be just your cup of tea.
Luck of the Irish: A Cozy Mystery Anthology is a bit different than what I expected, perhaps. Different writers, yes, there are ten, so there is a variety of style and presentation. All are necessarily short, so each can be read in a quick sitting, which is nice.
All the stories contain an amateur sleuth of some capacity who reluctantly or quite happily tries to solve a crime the police cannot. Often, small towns are involved. What I most found missing was humor, that while not a cozy requirement, is something that I believe adds much to the genre. I also missed any real faith lessons, although none were promised. Some situations bordered on the out-of-bounds for me, and one story I didn’t finish. I felt it was cruder than necessary.
There were some stories I did enjoy. My fave was JR Lancaster’s A Foliage Farewell, where a horticulturist who rarely leaves his house travels to a country manor to discover why the rich man’s prized conservatory plants were dying. This story reminded me of Encyclopedia Brown from my childhood.
I also enjoyed A Tale of Fickle Fortune by Amy Grundy in which a leprechaun statue is thought to bring good luck to its
possessor, if returned to giver in the allotted time.
I also liked Jessica Brimer’s Clover in Murder, for the reasoning behind murder and a twist at the end of the story.
Yet another story that caught my attention for its surprising twist at the end is Leprechaun Gold by Jaclyn Wrist. The sleuth and the police are friendly to each other. The clue of the stamp and how it plays out amazes me. But more so, it’s the ending that amazes me. I want to rewind that ending or interview the one character, and ask, “Now, just HOW did you know that was the right thing to do again?!”
I also thought CA Phipps had a good story with Luck of Shadows and a woman named Patience who grants people’s last wishes.
I received a copy of the book from Celebrate Lit, plus I bought my own ecopy. No positive review was required, and all opinions are my own.
