Editorial Reviews

Review

"From page one there's no looking back. True to form, Darcy delivers the first of many twists...immediately hooking the reader. The Pact explores the beauty of sisterhood, the joys of romance, and the trials and tribulations of finding your place in the world."

-J'Aimee Brooker, reviewer, AusRom Today

"In The Pact, Darcy explores the rollercoaster of life on the doubles tennis circuit and adds the tension of a sibling relationship. Samantha and Annie's fraught journey encompasses love, triumph, defeat, grief and joy; all the feels-alongside liberal servings of humour, snappy dialogue and insight into the human condition. I raced through this engaging read, cheering not only for the sisters to win on court, but also for them to find peace and happiness in life. Lisa Darcy at her best."

-Andrea Barton, author of The Godfather of Dance

"Drama, action, love, lust, twists and turns; it's all here. You certainly won't be disappointed reading The Pact."

-Jodi Gibson, author of Reinventing Emily Brown, The Five-Year Planand The Memories We Hide

"The pro-tennis circuit is used by Darcy to explore the complex lives of sisters and doubles partners, Samantha and Annie Callahan as they struggle with their careers and romantic relationships in the hot-house world of elite sport. I was fully engaged by their attempts and frequent failures to understand each other, which ultimately provide opportunities for growth and acceptance. An exciting, pacey read with great characters, plot and dialogue. Highly recommended."

-Diane Clarke, author of The Photograph

"Sprightly...well crafted and lively...containing sharp insights..."

-Sydney Morning Herald

This is a fantastic story of two sisters that play doubles tennis together and what happens when the dynamic between them gets thrown off by life circumstances and the need to find their own paths as individuals. I really loved how the author explored the heartbreak that came from their separation and also the ties that bring them back together. There is a lot of growth in their romantic relationships as well and I enjoyed seeing how that played out.
The behind the scenes look at being a tennis player is fascinating and I learned more about the pressures of being a professional athlete. This is a thoroughly engrossing novel that was hard to put down and I loved every minute spent with these magnetic characters.

Thanks to @suzyapprovedbooktours and @lisadarcyauthor for my copy! This book made me think of my relationship with my sister, we are so different and it’s constant sibling rivalry! The pro-tennis world is a great competitive setting for this story that explores the relationship of sisters who are doubles partners, Samantha and Annie Callahan. I enjoyed the evolving story, the relationships and games, and the romantic trysts. It was a fast, fun read!⁣

I really enjoyed this story with depth that tackled serious issues in the world of tennis. Don’t let the cute cover fool you, this is one amazing read about sisterhood, love and loss, competitive sport and the high level expectations, and so much more. Through differing point of views and short chapters, the plot moves quickly and with a few twists and turns, this was a read that I didn’t want to see end. I enjoyed it thoroughly! ⁣

This was a pager turner for me. I was invested in the sisters and the tennis right out of the gate. This book was a great mix of sisterhood, friendship, competition, family dynamics, romance, winning, losing, soul searching and second chances. It was interesting to learn more about the professional tennis circuit. I really enjoyed this book and highly recommend it.

This one surprised me. I didn’t realize it would be set in Australia so that was interesting. This wasn’t really a romance either like I thought it would be. It’s mostly about Annie and Sam and their relationship, and contains some heavy subjects as well. I like that the author was not afraid to dive into some intense subject matter and write a story where things get messy. I was hooked on this story and finished it pretty quickly. This may be one you want to pick up!⁣

This is one of those books that shattered my heart and slowly put it back together. I was invested in the characters and their relationships and found myself cheering them on, crying with them, and yelling at the pages when I didn’t like their choices. Samantha has always taken care of everyone and has always been focused on playing doubles tennis with her sister Annie. Now everything is changing and Samantha doesn’t know what to do. Her life is spinning out of control and what she always thought would be a part of her is disappearing. What can she do? Is there life after professional tennis? Bear, her coach, has promised to always be there but everyone leaves her. Can she open her heart or is she too afraid of losing someone else?
This is a story of sisters and their relationship. It is also a story of love, loss, insecurity, and having the courage to let go and to create a life of your own. I adored this story and did not want it to end.

Great cover! Eye-catching and fun. The story was okay. I do like reading about sisters and it seemed slow at times but I wanted to find out what happened with them.

The Pact by Lisa Darby is a really fun sports romance that I highly enjoyed.
But first, that cover is fantastic, drew me into the story before I even started reading.

I also love that the story was about sisters. This was so relatable to me, the dynamic between the two sister, Annie and Samantha. The bond these two is put to the test in the elite world of tennis.

I will admit, I don't know much about tennis, but it was really fun learning about the behind the scenes.

The pressure of the two sisters as being elite doubles at the top of their game.
I really enjoyed the multiple point of views as well.

Will a budding relationship force the sisters to s split up their double team.
How will this affect their relationship?

I really enjoyed this sports romance, which was so much more.

The characters were complex, flawed and well developed.

Even if you are not one for sports romance, this is one not to miss!

Unforgettable
5.0 out of 5 stars Lisa Darcy Serves An Ace With ‘The Pact’
Reviewed in Australia on April 3, 2024
A satisfying read (in just two days!) about Australian sisters on and off the professional tennis circuit. I really enjoyed the two main characters and the support cast of quirky and a little bit scary women’s tennis players who had all types of issues. These sisters, Annie and Samantha, had a lot of major life trauma to work through, and did so in very different ways. I’m a big tennis fan, so I loved the professional tennis tournament scenes as the place where much of the story unfolded, especially the way the off-court time was portrayed. The male love interests were also well written. Highly recommended - even to non-tennis fans.

I would have read this in one sitting if I hadn't had to sleep! Woke up and picked it straight back up again. Loved being immersed in the tennis world, and while I wanted to smack the sisters at times, I thought the way they related was real as they and their relationship changed over the course of the book. Great characters and a strong plot. What more could you want?

Allow yourself to be transported to a ringside seat! The pro-tennis circuit is the backdrop for Lisa Darcy's novel which explores the complex and fascinating lives of two sisters and doubles partners, Samantha and Annie Callahan. With different skills, attitudes and motivations we see them struggle with their careers and romantic relationships in the hot-house of elite sport. I was fully engaged by their attempts and frequent failures to understand each other which, ultimately, provide opportunities for growth and acceptance. This is an exciting, pacey read with great characters, plot and dialogue. Highly recommended.

I’m a long-term fan of Lisa Darcy’s work and was super excited to read an ARC of The Pact, which did not disappoint. The novel follows the journey of sisters and tennis duo, Samantha and Annie Callahan as they deal with the pressures and heartbreaks of professional tennis. Sam is driving force behind the pair, yet when Annie falls for the wrong man, their lives and careers descend into chaos. With great skill, Darcy explores the often-complicated relationship between sisters and by the end, the reader is cheering for both of the dynamic duo, on and off the court. An uplifting story that showcases Darcy’s ever warm and readable voice and gives rare and accurate insight into professional sport, not to mention falling in love and starting over. I don’t play tennis, I don’t have a sister, yet I couldn’t put it down. Definitely recommended.

This uplifting novel gives us an insider’s look into elite tennis. The author skilfully draws the reader into a rich family drama, focusing on two sisters and their complex relationship. Lots of twists and intense moments. Once I picked this up, it was very hard to put down. Captivating.
