Ethnology of Vanuatu: An Early Twentieth Century Study - is a rich documentation resulting from a Swiss anthropologist Felix Speiser, who spent more than two years in the field (May 1910 - July 1912), first published in German in 1923 it is now for the first time translated into English.

This book has recorded much of the country's early material culture which, without this record would have been lost forever.

This in-depth compilation is abundantly illustrated with over 109 plates providing over 1,600 illustrations 50 plates of which are in colour, making it one of the major documents published on the arts of the Vanuatu. A must for anyone with an interest in the Ethnology of Vanuatu.

The text is extensive and covers all areas including:

- Colonial history
- geography
- human factor
- habitation
- daily living
- dress and ornament
- hunting and warfare and communication
- production and exchange of goods
- the life cycle
- social and political organisation
- religion

Hardcover, plain boards with simple pictorial DJ, 643 pages, 11.75" x 8.75". 66 items in color, Bibliography, 109 "plates" featuring hundreds of B/W field photos, native peoples, tribal motifs, architectural elements, dishes, weapons, ornaments, clothes, belts, spears, arrows, bows, clubs, canoes, bowls, bowls, masks etc. Published by University Of Hawai'i Press, Honolulu, 1996.

Fascinating, but difficult-to-read reprinting of Swiss Anthropologist Felix Speiser's pedantically ethnological 1923 study " Ethnographische Materialien Aus Den Heuen Hebriden Und Den Bamks-Inseln". (Originally Published In German in 1923, here translated into English). Felix Speiser spent two years in Vanuatu from May 1910 to July 1912 and has produced a detailed ethnological study of the peoples and culture of Vanuatu. The book should probably be rated somewhere between 3 and 4 stars, but it is highly recommended for lovers of the wonderful art of Vanuatu for the striking featured objects alone. (NOTE : The islands of Vanuatu were formerly known as "New Hebrides")
