Nazi Culture: Intellectual, Cultural, and Social Life in the Third Reich (George L. Mosse Series in Modern European Cultural and Intellectual History) ... of European Culture, Sexuality, and Ideas) Paperback – October 15, 2003
Purchase options and add-ons
What was life like under the Third Reich? What went on between parents and children? What were the prevailing attitudes about sex, morality, religion? How did workers perceive the effects of the New Order in the workplace? What were the cultural currents—in art, music, science, education, drama, and on the radio?
Professor Mosse’s extensive analysis of Nazi culture—groundbreaking upon its original publication in 1966—is now offered to readers of a new generation. Selections from newspapers, novellas, plays, and diaries as well as the public pronouncements of Nazi leaders, churchmen, and professors describe National Socialism in practice and explore what it meant for the average German.
By recapturing the texture of culture and thought under the Third Reich, Mosse’s work still resonates today—as a document of everyday life in one of history’s darkest eras and as a living memory that reminds us never to forget.

For anyone who wants to avoid fascist elements in a free country, this is a necessity. Don't let a scholar tell you his opinions, use this book to study the texts and become a scholar yourself.
I remember 1966 (the year this book was published) pretty well...I passed my driver's license test that year. I also remember how civics and other politically related teaching was presented and the slant it took, at least in a very small town in Alabama. Surprisingly, I remember it being pretty fair to liberal concepts. I mean, my and everyone else's fathers had served in the Armed Forces in what can be fairly described as a war against evily extreme conservativism run rampant. And the teaching provided in our high school supported those victorious efforts.
This book accurately reflects the flavor of that mid-century thinking as it gives it's 1966 audience a fair description of what day-to-day cultural waters the non-Jewish population of Nazi Germany swam in some 30 years previous. It does this, not in hysterical hyperbole, but in measured and thoughtful, historically accurate descriptions of the way it was. And, here's the kicker..., it backs up those conclusions with documents, both public and private, official proclamations and the cultural responses to them. Fascinating.
Upon reflection, I think it's more relevant today than it was in 1966. It certainly needs more reading today.
The subjects range from the culture itself, to heroes and myths, to racism, to christianity, to whether it is proper for a German woman to have a career or is it more important to have children. Even Adolf Hitler rings in with a speech about that question.
I have the Grosset's Universal Library trade paperback from 1968 which cost a lowly $2.65 at the time. It's good to see this later reprint which will allow a larger, contemporary audience to be privy to the book. For the serious investigator of the Third Reich it is interesting as well as informing to read in translation extracts of the writings of the Third Reich. The book is a keeper.
