They had the most dangerous job n the Air Force. Now Bury Us Upside Down reveals the never-before-told story of the Vietnam War’s top-secret jet-fighter outfit–an all-volunteer unit composed of truly extraordinary men who flew missions from which heroes are made.

In today’s wars, computers, targeting pods, lasers, and precision-guided bombs help FAC (forward air controller) pilots identify and destroy targets from safe distances. But in the search for enemy traffic on the elusive Ho Chi Minh Trail, always risking enemy fire, capture, and death, pilots had to drop low enough to glimpse the telltale signs of movement such as suspicious dust on treetops or disappearing tire marks on a dirt road (indicating a hidden truck park). Written by an accomplished journalist and veteran, Bury Us Upside Down is the stunning story of these brave Americans, the men who flew in the covert Operation Commando Sabre–or “Misty”–the most innovative air operation of the war.

In missions that lasted for hours, the pilots of Misty flew zigzag patterns searching for enemy troops, vehicles, and weapons, without benefit of night-vision goggles, infrared devices, or other now common sensors. What they gained in exhilarating autonomy also cost them: of 157 pilots, 34 were shot down, 3 captured, and 7 killed. Here is a firsthand account of courage and technical mastery under fire. Here, too, is a tale of forbearance and loss, including the experience of the family of a missing Misty flier–Howard K. Williams–as they learn, after twenty-three years, that his remains have been found.

Now that bombs are smart and remote sensors are even smarter, the missions that the Mistys flew would now be considered no less than suicidal. Bury Us Upside Down reminds us that for some, such dangers simply came with the territory.

Review

Praise for Bury Us Upside Down

"The stories . . . are vivid and timeless: : the North Vietnamese gunner who was so inept that the Mistys had a standing order not to shoot him; the pilot who dissuaded his new commander from launching night Misty missions by taking him on a night flight and surreptitiously switching on the outboard lights over heavy ground fire; the Misty custom of igniting their afterburners over POW sites, sending out a familiar booming noise that told the downed airmen they were not forgotten. [A] gripping narrative. . . . It's a fabulous read."
–The Washington Post

“This is a true story about real warriors–both those who came home and those who did not–and the legacy they left. The story of the Misty pilots fills a gap in our understanding of the Vietnam War, and reminds armchair tacticians what the true cost of war is, and who pays the price.”
–Joseph Galloway, co-author of We Were Soldiers Once . . . and Young

“Rip that Nintendo out of your kid’s hands and hand him Bury Us Upside Down! This outstanding book will give him insight into what real aerial combat, flown by real heroes, is like. Undoubtedly the best book of its type,
Bury Us Upside Down is the truth writ bold and simple–the story of the men who fought the war flying the toughest missions imaginable, and their families. It is a book of heroes, and just reading it gives you insight into what a true hero feels.”
–Walter J. Boyne, former director, National Air and Space Museum, Smithsonian Institution

“With its great in-the-cockpit stories of the first jet-fighter combat forward air controllers, Bury Us Upside Down is an incredible account of how it all started. The reader will feel the G forces, the strain of avoiding ground fire, the satisfaction of a completed rescue, the black humor of combat-hardened pilots, and the effects on the families of those who didn’t return. But most of all the reader will feel proud America can produce such men.”
–Mark Berent, author of the Rolling Thunder series

“[A] thoroughly readable, absorbing history . . . a distinguished addition to Vietnam War aviation literature.”
–Publishers Weekly

One of the best books about my war I have read on it. Pulls no punches and is very informative as to the mindset at that time in America's history. The author has written a very good account not only of the pilots but the politics surrounding the war and the aftermath to some. We lost this war at home. The politicians fought this war like they were campaigning for office, that it was mere game in the grand scheme of things. That is my viewpoint. Johnson quit his re-election bid more out the realization that public opinion was turning against the war and he refused to put the effort into it to win. Walter Cronkite cost many American lives with his pronouncement that the war was lost after the TET offensive and they left these people dangling in a war the government had no stomach to actually win anymore. Nixon tried after he was elected but the damage was done before he even had a chance to do something. Vietnam was the epitome of a political screw up and no back bone by those in charge. That is my opinion and this book pretty much shows that. These pilots were the best of the best and they were nothing more than political chaff in the end. God Bless these men and my heart goes out to them and the ones they left behind. This book is a must read.

This is a captivating book that chronicles the missions, and the losses, of the famed Misty squadron. Their charge was to fly over North Vietnam and Laos to serve as Fast FACs (Forward Air Controllers) in the most heavily defended airspace in the history of aerial warfare. Their loss rate was much higher than that of other units flying F-100s, and they participated in numerous SAR (Search and Rescue) missions.
The book goes into great detail on one of the most notable SARs of the war - the attempt to rescue Lance Sijan (who was postumously awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor), and the author expertly foreshadows what happens to Howie, one of the Misty pilots.
One of the great strengths of this book, in my opinion, is the often-ignored discussion of the treatment of the wives of pilots declared Missing In Action (MIA). The Air Force kept information from them, and they lived in limbo for long periods, some as long as eight years, to learn the fates of their husbands. We learn what they went through, and how the war affected the children.
I loved the way the author saved the revelation of the genesis of the title until the last chapter.

If anyone had told me that this book would be as interesting as it turned out to be, I wouldn't have believed it. After all, the Vietnam War was something of a low point in American history, what with its poor political leadership, its anti-war demonstrators, too many brave men killed, a disappointing ending, and still more brave men scorned. This is not something most Americans, particularly conservatives, would look forward to reading about. But this book surprised me.

In the main, it details the heroic actions of a small cadre of pilots in a top-secret organization in Vietnam in the 1960s. Code named "Commando Sabre," the unit was better known by the call sign of its first commander, "Misty." Misty's task was to impede the flow of arms, supplies, men, and munitions which were moving down the Ho Chi Minh Trail from North to South Vietnam. To do so, it was necessary to fly Forward Air Control (FAC) missions at low altitudes and jet speed up and down the 450 mile long trail, all the while scanning the jungle for hidden targets of opportunity. When one was found, it was generally well camouflaged and protected by hidden Anti-Aircraft Artillery (AAA) batteries. The Misty airmen's task then became one of calling-in fighter bombers to destroy the target while flying at higher altitudes. Before doing so, however, the Misty pilots had to fly back over the area at a low altitude and mark the concealed target using smoke producing rockets. The work was tedious and extremely dangerous. So, all Misty pilots were volunteers and their tours of duty were limited to only four months or 60 missions, although some volunteered to stay longer (one up to 107 sorties).

But the book tells more than just the saga of Misty. It is set in a much broader context and almost tells the story of the entire Vietnam War as seen through the eyes of those who fought it in the air and those they left behind - sometimes forever. It begins with the "remains" of one Misty flyer, a tooth and a bone fragment, being ceremoniously buried in Arlington National Cemetery twenty some years after he was shot down in Vietnam. Then it flashes back to the beginning and tells us his story and that of many others who served with him, or who also served with Misty. Some of those also didn't return. Along the way, it lets us know what the women and children who were left behind were doing and thinking, and how they felt -- particularly when their men also went Missing In Action (MIA). It also gives us a glimpse of what it was like to be captured and tortured and try to survive in the Hanoi Hilton. In the end, the book returns to its beginning, with the recovery of one flyers "remains" which wouldn't fill a coffee cup, a small bone fragment and one tooth.

This is an outstanding book about some truly great Americans. It will help you better understand those who fought our past wars and may give you a little better insight into what we as a nation are up against in today's world and the kind of men and women who are fighting our battles for us. Best of all, it's so well written that you won't be able to put it down.

I almost couldn't put it down ! It's that good.
Loaned it to my Brother In Law who was in Vietnam, and he said he couldn't put it down. And it is accurate too, because he remembered seeing some of the things the pilots describe in the book.

This is one of the very best books on the Vietnam war. It depicts in captivating detail the courageous men and the dangerous mission of the "Misty" FACs, There was no play-book for what they did. They "invented" the "Fast FAC" (Forward Air Controller) concept, a mission previously performed by slower, more vulnerable spotter planes such as the O-1, the O-2, and the OV-10. With two pilots flying the 2-Seat version of the F-100 (normally used only for training), they took the fight into high threat areas - with the associated increase in the danger of the mission, and the commensurate high loss rate. But their dedication, professionalism, and superb skill stopped much of the flow of supplies from North Vietnam into the south, where they would have been used against American and South Vietnamese ground troops. Brilliantly written. Makes you feel like you were there.

Respectful and gripping storytelling. I didn’t expect to finish the book, as this style often ends up repeating the two or three key elements. This book is different.

It’s not literature. But it is well written and provides a unique insight in the crazed world of what we westerners call “the Vietnam war”.

A gripping account of what turned out to be the forerunners of the modern concept of `Forward Air Controller` or FAC. But this was a brutal process of trial and error that came at a very high price in pilots and their F100 Super Sabre jet aircraft. These pilots literally `poked the hornets nest` in order to provoke ground fire to locate and destroy anti aircraft batteries of the Viet Cong and NVA. A breathtaking account of a little known aspect of the air war over Vietnam in the mid-late 60's.
