Despite the short nature of this book I felt the characters were really well done. Katz did a wonderful job showing the personalities of Clara and Sal, and even Clara's pet AI hummingbird, Joanie. Clara's a person who doesn't like to stay in one place too long, and Sal is an autonomous robot who is nearly the opposite, staying in the exact same place for nearly three hundred years. Despite their differences, not just in intent but composition, they are drawn to each other mentally and emotionally.
Being a novella, there isn’t a lot of time and space to tell the story but Katz does so masterfully. I love most things robot or tech oriented and when you throw in some romance it was nearly a slam dunk for me. My only protest was to wish it had been a full-length novel. I would love to know more about the characters, their past and future.
Despite being such a short read, The Cybernetic Tea Shop was beautiful, real, and compelling. One thing I'd like to note is that in the past I’ve had a hard time connecting to asexual romance, not because I believe it’s invalid, but rather because it’s not my experience. This is the first novel where I felt connected and it was so surprising and wonderful when I realized how things could work. The Cybernetic Tea Shop wasn't too heavy, it managed to be both cute and surprisingly deep with the inclusion of Sal’s thoughts. I highly recommend this short read!
