4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars 1,613 ratings

Hugh De Luc returns from the Crusades to find his son killed, his wife kidnapped, and his town gutted in the search for a priceless relic . . . and now, he must fight to save everything he holds dear.
Arriving home disillusioned from the Crusades, Hugh DeLuc discovers his village has been ransacked and his wife abducted. The dark riders came in the dead of night, like devils, wearing no colours but black crosses on their chests. They search for a relic, one worth more than any throne in Europe, and no man can stand in their way.
But now, disguised as a jester, Hugh is able to infiltrate the castle where he believes his wife is being held captive. When a man is fighting for freedom, for his wife, and for everything he holds dear, he's a worthy opponent . . . maybe even unstoppable.
With the rapid pace of a page-turning thriller,
The Jester is a breathtaking adventure. Full of pulse-pounding plot twists and mysteries, Hugh's quest to find Sophie is one of the most unforgettable love stories in all of fiction.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Just who is writing the coauthored Patterson novels makes for interesting water-cooler chat, but whether the majority of words are contributed by Patterson or Gross, this terrific new novel is prime Patterson all the way, another step in the author's application of his patented storytelling style to a multitude of genres-in this case, historicals. The title character is, when introduced in 1096, an unassuming innkeeper in a French village oppressed by the local nobleman. To earn his freedom, Hugh de Luc joins the Crusades for a torturous, bloody march toward Jerusalem that occupies the book's first third and ends with him escaping the madness around him by deserting back to France, in possession of some minor treasures-or so he thinks. Back home, he finds that his beloved wife has been taken captive by the odious nobleman, and his infant son slain. Seeking his wife and revenge, Hugh adopts the guise of a jester in order to enter to the nobleman's castle, where he begins to fall in love with a young noblewoman, and she with him. In time, Hugh finds his wife, only to experience tragedy, and learns that the nobleman is searching for him, as he is believed to have carried back from the Crusades the greatest holy relic of all. Returning to his village, which has been destroyed during the nobleman's hunt for him, Hugh persuades his townspeople, then surrounding towns, to rise up in revolt against the corrupt nobleman and his henchmen. From start to finish, this is supersmart popular fiction, slick yet stirring, packed with colorful details of medieval life, bursting with unforgettable characters and clever tropes and themes. Patterson's fans will adore this one.

Another departure for Patterson after Suzanne's Diary for Nicholas: home from the Crusades, Hugh must play the jester to find his wife, abducted by knights.

Not typical of Patterson but I loved it. The history, descriptions, the characters we fascinating and timely with all the historical stuff on tv subscriptions. Also, with the new Viking of England.

An interesting period of history to set a book.

The story was easy to follow and had easy reading too.

Unfortunately there were some distracting inaccuracies in the historical details. I doubt that most people would be bothered by it though.

I will definitely read more from this author as the chapters are short and the writing style perfect for someone who has a busy life with lots of interruptions to their reading time.

A friend recommended this to me as being Patterson's best book, and now that I have read it, I agree. It is part Braveheart, part Gladiator. Hugh De Luc runs a small village inn with his beautiful young wife. But the tyrannical Lord Baldwin and his minions terrorize the village and exact huge taxes and kill and torture citizens. Hugh De Luc goes to war to fight for a better world, only to be disillusioned by the violence. He comes home to find that he has a young son who was killed and that his wife was abducted. He goes on a single minded mission to find her, becoming a jester so that he can infiltrate Baldwin's court. Along the way, he is aided by a beautiful noble woman and a wise old jester.

The book is about love, loyalty, and the dream of a world at peace. One of the best books I've ever read.

Tied in my opinion for Patterson's best book. Not the usual plot line. Very entertaining. Set in the time of the Crusades. Gritty at times, as well as inspiring and exciting, with well-developed characters and story, with a bit of romance and humor. Historical novel. Highly recommended.

I love James Patterson but this was probably one of my least favorite books by him. I think it too me until I was over 60% finished with the book to really get into it. Towards the end, I really enjoyed it but I almost just quit during the first half.

I thought it was a great book. I've been a fan of Patterson's but just recently (past year). So I still have a lot of his older novels to catch up. And this was completely out of the box for his style but even though at the first 50 pages or so in my mind I was thinking, ughhh I am not going to like this. I actually stayed up until 3 a.m. finishing it because I became so enthralled with the character, Hugh and his quest. Sure, it was a bit far fetched at times, but it is a fiction novel meant to entertain not educate us on Medieval times. It wasn't my favorite of his but I have been disappointed in his novels as of recently so I was hesitant but I was pleasantly surprised.

The writing is well done like all of Patterson’s books. However, the story was a little too Robin Hood-ish. Plus the flips and tricks the Jester does are hard to visualize without seeing a Jar-Jar Binks front flip in your head.

5.0 out of 5 stars Engrossing tale...I would like more!

Jester is a departure from Patterson's usual story arc; there's no detectives, police, or anything like that here. instead, we're back in the 1100s with an engrossing, interesting tale about the serfs struggling against their liege lords. It has a classic story arc that pulls you in and keeps you reading. I was reminded several times of some of the longer historic novels of some of my other favorite authors. Yet while this isn't classic Patterson, it still retains his stamp. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and wish there were more like it! Highly recommended novel.
