A riveting look into the personal lives of our presidents through the eyes of their White House doctor

"An interesting, behind-the-scenes glimpse of life at the White House." - Kirkus Reviews

Dr. Connie Mariano served 9 years at the White House under Presidents George H.W. Bush, William J. Clinton, and George W. Bush. She participated in world headline-making news events and traveled all over the world. She cared for visiting dignitaries and was charged with caring for all the members of the First Family. From flirting with King Juan Carlos of Spain to spending the night on the Queen of England's yacht, Dr. Mariano glimpsed a glittering and powerful celebrity that few ever see.

White House Doctor is a fascinating look into what goes on behind closed doors at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

This doctor is a bit of a celebrity herself: the first military woman in U.S. history to be appointed White House doctor, the first female director of the White House medical unit, and the first Filipino-American to become a navy rear admiral. And though Mariano humbly bows to the bigger-than-life presidents—George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton—she cared for during eight years in Washington, it's her journey that's so remarkable. Having begun life in 1955 as the daughter of a U.S. Navy steward in the Philippines, she was appointed a White House physician by the navy in 1992, and her mettle was thoroughly tested during medical emergencies—and political storms. Whether helping to treat Bush's skin cancer or dispensing a Band-Aid on the golf course, accompanying the president on overseas trips or performing a Heimlich maneuver on a choking guest at a holiday gala, Mariano always kept her cool and her sense of humor, which she retains in this unusual inside look at the White House. 8 pages of color photos. Wonderful memoir

This is an interesting read and gave me a lot of insight into the medical unit. I ended up liking the book but Dr. Mariano came across as so overly dedicated to Bill Clinton that her own family suffered. With a staff and people who could give her a more normal life she chose to devote herself to The First Patient and family to the extent that he Christmas shopping for them superseded her own children's Christmas gifts. She destroyed her marriage and sacrificed her relationship with her sons in what appeared to be a slavish devotion to the First Family. In the end I admired her first husband far more than I did her.

I’ve read most of the books written about the White House occupants including butlers, cooks, wait staff, etc. this book is amazing. As an immigrant to this wonderful country at age 7, my Dad told me to absorb everything I could about where I came from (Scotland} to where I was raised and grew both spiritually and educationally. Of course, being married to a marvelous doctor helped me through the medical nouances of this book. I highly recommend it!

I found this book interesting and engaging throughout; however, I have a few frustrations (most if which were shared in other reviews):

1. The timeline-jumping distracts the reader tremendously from the narrative. This, coupled with odd sub-heading numbering within each chapter, was very confusing.

2. A lot of the narrative felt repetitive.

3. Some voiced frustration that the author gave up her family life for the powerful once-in-a-life position. This was her decision. But what frustrated me was that for all of the build-up to her divorce (alluded to sporadically throughout the book), the author cuts her divorce and new relationship surprisingly short in the final chapter. It kind of felt like the end of the Sopranos.

Don't get me wrong though: I enjoyed the stories and insider's perspective of the White House medical staff and still would recommend this book to a friend. Perhaps Dr. Mariano's memoir would have been better served with help from a co-writer or ghost writer or better editor to address the flow of her narrative.

Never took time to think about the critical roles played by the medical staff covering the presidents. But, this interesting read was informative and insightful about this little known or considered dedicated and hardworking professionals whose job it is to care for our presidents. I was surprised many times at the challenges as well as the scope of the medical personnel job and role. Admiral Mariano's book is a great read about the job of the medical staff in the White House. But, I also loved her personal story. She's an amazing person and certainly a role model. Don't expect gossip or glamour here. Rather, learn the unseen and unknown yet vital job of military service personnel who work 24/7 protecting the health and wellbeing of our nation by serving our presidents and everyone associated with them.

Dr. Mariano was the first female doctor to be The White House doctor, having served under Presidents GW Bush and Bill Clinton. Her story, while laced with the humility of being the daughter of a U.S. Navy steward, is full of pride, having achieved excellence and fame. She shares some confidences, exposing the care with which we guard the POTUS, all the protocol with White House employees, be they civilians or military, as she is. There is complimentary reporting of Bill & Hillary Clinton, the obvious affection they all had for each other. This book would be very inspirational for any young woman with high aspirations.

Had to read this book to find out more about Connie. I was on a flight from Chicago to Phoenix and I had the pleasure of being seated next to her. At the time I had no idea who she was. A short time into the flight an announcement was made asking if there was anyone on the plane that was a doctor as a small child had tripped going down the aisle and had hit her head. Connie got up and went to the back of the plane. When she returned I asked if she was a doctor and she told me who she was. I thoroughly enjoyed my flight with her, she was very down to earth and easy to talk with the whole flight. I enjoyed this book and the stories told.

Engaging true story of an interesting career. The book was easy and interesting to read. However at times a bit redundant.
