House on Fire: A Novel (A Nick Heller Novel Book 4) Kindle Edition

4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars 2,588 ratings

In New York Times bestselling author Joseph Finder's electrifying new thriller, private investigator Nick Heller infiltrates a powerful wealthy family hiding something sinister.

Nick Heller is at the top of his game when he receives some devastating news: his old army buddy Sean has died of an overdose. Sean, who once saved Nick’s life, got addicted to opioids after returning home wounded from war.

Then at Sean’s funeral, a stranger approaches Nick with a job, and maybe also a way for Nick to hold someone accountable.

The woman is the daughter of a pharmaceutical kingpin worth billions. Now she wants to become a whistleblower, exposing her father and his company for burying evidence that its biggest money-maker was dangerously addictive. It was a lie that killed hundreds of thousands of people, including Sean.

All Nick has to do is find the document that proves the family knew the drug’s dangers. But Nick soon realizes that the sins of the patriarch are just the beginning.

Beneath the surface are barely concealed cabals and conspiracies: a twisting story of family intrigue and lethal corporate machinations. In a deadly game of chess that pits Nick against a family dynasty, against brothers and sisters with schemes of their own, Nick learns how far his enemy is willing to go to protect its name and its wealth.

"A mixture of Jason Bourne and Sam Spade, Nick Heller is the man you want in your corner.
House on Fire is classic whodunit wrapped in a modern world of technology and current events, with enough twists to keep you reading long into the night."Brad Taylor, New York Times bestselling author of Daughter of War

“Joseph Finder brings back his Nick Heller character after a brief hiatus with smashing (literally!) results in
House on Fire… Packed with both brains and brawn, House on Fire is thriller writing at its very best, conjuring tomorrow’s headlines instead of ripping off today’s.”Jon Land for Providence Journal

“Heller can pick locks, handle weapons, and attract beautiful women with the best of them, but the first-person narrative is natural and engaging. A crisp, fast-paced adventure.”
—The Times of London

The book is clearly inspired, despite denials, by the wretched Sackler family. Finder turns it into an enjoyable story with a telegraphed twist at the end. The characters are well developed and there is plenty of action.

Nick Heller does an excellent job of putting himself right in the middle of trouble, sorting things out and finding a good escape hatch. Interesting characters, good flow and a good storyline.

A modern day robber baron and his dysfunctional family. In some respects, this is history repeating itself. It has echoes of medieval times. Disputes between children, a child not willing to wait to inherit the throne, decadent wealth, etc. It is wrapped around a modern problem of opioids and drug addiction. Of course, Nick Heller's father has to figure into the plot - a devious old man with his own objectives. I can see shades of my medieval ancestors.

Nick Heller is not a man to get crossways with. He will avenge wrong doing that has injured those he feels an obligation to or whom he loves. A lot of high tech is involved. Nick has rresources. involving some unusual people.

I don’t know where to start. The poor plot? Poor character development? I slogged my way through hoping it would get better but no such luck. It’s unfortunate because I really liked the author’s earlier books.

Joe Finder has done it again! I don't know how it's possible, but he just keeps getting better and better! House on Fire grabbed me from the very first page and didn't let go. I like to read certain books very slowly to really enjoy the journey that the author takes you on... it takes a lot of blood, sweat, tears... and sleepless nights to write a novel, let alone a great novel, so I believe finishing a book quickly is somehow an insult to the arduous journey and task the author undertakes... I mean, we owe them our time to dig deep, right? I find Finder's books hard to do that with... I want to keep reading them, yet I force myself to stop, to reflect, to soak in a delicious turn of phrase. Thanks, Joe. it's a great piece of work!!!

I have been a huge fan of all of Joseph Finder’s books but I felt this one wasn’t quite one of his best. The story was loosely held together by too many characters that didn’t feel developed enough in my opinion. It didn’t keep my interest as strong as his other books and I had to force myself to finish it.

I enjoy both Joseph Finder's stand alone novels as well as his Nick Heller series and House on Fire doesn't disappoint. I started it last night and read way too late into the night, then finally turned off the light. I woke up at 5am, and picked up the book again and read until my eyes wouldn't stay open any longer. I'm enjoying it immensely so far. Full disclosure, I'm not finished yet... but I've never read a book by Joseph Finder that doesn't keep me enthralled right to the bitter end. Highly recommend picking up a copy of House on Fire. Or better yet, grab the first book in the Nick Heller series and read them in order. You won't be disappointed.

Perhaps the author relied too heavily upon current events. That lent something already familiar to the story. I love the hero in these books, just was not as thrilled with the storyline as I have been before. Still, it's a satisfying read and I look forward to the next Finder book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Joseph Finder on Fire!
Reviewed in Canada on November 20, 2023
There’s a very good reason why Joseph Finder is among my favorite thriller authors. House On Fire epitomizes everything that makes his books must reading for me. Ex-soldier turned private detective Nick Heller is a multi-faceted character you can’t help but root for, the supporting cast is outstanding, and even the antagonists are well fleshed out. The author keeps us guessing about who may be or may not be Nick’s allies as he is pulled deeper and deeper into the myriad disfunctions of the Kimball family. The plot of the story, which centers around the opioid epidemic and the companies that fuel it, is a twisty, turny delight. The exhaustive research Finder puts into his novels shines through here, making House on Fire not only a highly enjoyable read, but also a primer on the subject at the heart of the story. The resolution packs a punch and a couple of late surprises I didn’t see coming. Finder has outdone himself yet again.
