Yoga and Veganism: The Diet of Enlightenment Paperback – May 26, 2020
Purchase options and add-ons
With yama, or restraint, the Yoga Sutras outline the first step on the path to spiritual liberation through five ethical principles that help guide our relationships with the world around us: Ahimsa teaches us how to avoid personal suffering through not harming others, while satya reveals how telling the truth allows us to be better listened to. Through asteya, or nonstealing, we learn the secret of wealth. Brahmacharya reveals how refraining from sexual misconduct leads to health and vitality, and finally, aparigraha opens our eyes to the ways in which greed holds us back from true happiness and is destroying the planet.
Yoga and Veganism shines a light on these five guiding principles, demonstrating how the practice of yoga is tied to an ethical vegan lifestyle, which opens the path to both physical wellness and spiritual enlightenment. Featuring a selection of delicious recipes from the author along with personal essays from individuals whose lives have been transformed by veganism—including filmmaker Kip Andersen (Cowspiracy) and activist Ingrid Newkirk (president of PETA)— Yoga and Veganism provides a framework for yoga students and teachers looking to bring their asana practice into alignment with the philosophy at the heart of the discipline, as well as with the Earth around them and all of the beings within it.

About the author
Sharon Gannon is a 21st century Renaissance woman who excels in many artistic, spiritual and social mediums. Sharon is best known for creating, along with David Life, the Jivamukti Yoga Method--a path to enlightenment through compassion for all beings.
The Jivamukti Yoga method emphasizes asana, Sanskrit, scriptural study, devotion, prayer, music, chanting and meditation as well as animal rights, veganism, environmentalism and political activism. Jivamukti’s passionate focus on the original meaning of the Sanskrit word "asana" as seat, connection—relationship to the earth is as practical as it is radical at this time of global crisis and consciousness shift. Blessed by her teachers Shri Brahmananda Sarasvati, Shri Swami Nirmalananda, and Shri K. Pattabhi Jois, she is a pioneer in teaching yoga as spiritual activism and is changing the way that people view, spirituality, life, themselves, each other, animals and the environment.
Sharon has produced and appeared on many yoga-related DVDs including and music CDs including the 2003 release of Neti Neti and the 2010 release of Sharanam, her solo début album, produced by Ferenz Kallos on the White Swan Label. She is a prolific writer and has authored several books: Jivamukti Yoga, (also translated into German, Russian & Italian) The Art of Yoga, The Jivamukti Chant Book, Yoga and Vegetarianism (also translated into German, Italian and Japanese) and Cats and Dogs are People too! Her writing has appeared in numerous publications, including Toward 2012, Arvana V: Music, Magic and Mysticism, What comes after Money?, Semiotext(e) and Yoga Journal. She writes a monthly essay called the Focus of the Month, which can be read at www.jivamuktyoga.com
YOGA JOURNAL Magazine has called her an innovator and VANITY FAIR gives her credit for making yoga cool and hip. JANE Magazine nominated her as Gutsiest Woman of the Year and THE FARM SANCTUARY awarded her the 2008 compassionate living award. She is a long-time vanguard member of PETA and has helped with many of their campaigns.
She travels extensively teaching and presenting at American, European, Canadian, Asian, South and Central American and Conferences. She resides in a 121-acre wild forest sanctuary in upstate NY, USA.

In Yoga and Veganism, Sharon completes the work of Yoga and Vegetarianism, which is a rough draft of Yoga and Veganism. Yoga and Veganism is an “A to Z” yoga manifesto and manual. It is a complete mission statement, and guidebook for the execution of that mission. There is a streamlined core of vegan applications of select Asian religious texts, some personal testimonials of vegan advocates, some foundational vegan recipes and a yoga sequence based on the “chakras”. Sharon also breaks down and palatable shares her methods of communication, which are based in her unique interpretation of Buddhism derived from Indian, Tibetan and American sources.
Sharon’s language is simple and persuasive, well reasoned while retaining a heart centered intention. Some of her humor comes through, although in general this book is an exercise of her messianic voice, quite ambitious and serious in gravity and tone. As it is translated into other languages, it will reach a wide audience of yoga service providers (teachers), chefs and foodies, health advocates and diet gurus as well as animal rights advocates.
It is an improvement in every way upon Yoga and Vegetarianism (which will continue to stand strong on its merits), EXCEPT for the cover. In my opinion, the cover of Yoga and Vegetarianism is charming with the cute six armed goddess offering vegan delectable. The cover of Yoga and Veganism is more austere with only a few arcane symbols adorning the corners. This is representative of the second version of the same book presenting as a serious reference in a modern college level ethics or environmental philosophy course rather than a passing fad book to be checked out in the cashier’s aisle of a health food store. Both mediums and settings are crucial for this knowledge at this time, so I am glad Sharon has chosen to update Yoga and Vegetarianism into Yoga and Veganism. Worth the read even if you have already read Yoga and Vegetarianism.
the book is excellent in many ways. YOGA should be about AHIMSA, harmlessness, but so many
yoga fans opmit spirituality and veganism in their practice. THEY GO HAND IN HAND TOGATHER.
To me, yoga is not about fashion of wearing polyester tigt clothing!.
