My review shows 4 stars but it’s really 4.5. As with most Scottoline books, it starts fast, the reader is grabbed and it hardly slows down. In this book we meet Bennie’s identical twin sister, a sister she had no idea had existed. Their meeting was not congenial, over a cup of coffee or a drink in a bar. Alice Connolly was in prison and ready for trial for murdering her policeman boyfriend. Bennie had taken over her defense a week before the trial was due to begin. Apart from the shattering news that Connolly was her identical twin (yet to be proven) Bennie and her team had no time to prepare for the case, especially as the judge refused a continuance to allow more time to prepare. Bennie also finds out who her estranged father is, and of course, she seeks to find find him.
As Scottoline leads us into and takes us through the trial, there are more twists and turns than a slinky. The Commonwealth has enough evidence to prove that Connolly is guilty. Bennie has to get through the obvious personal situation of finding out she has a twin, to try to prove her innocence under insurmountable odds. As usual, Bennie gets involved beyond just sitting in the courtroom or sifting through flimsy evidence in her office.
Fast moving, thought provoking and unpredictable, it was a very good read.

After reading My Nest Isn't Empty, I Just Have More Closet Space as a book club selection, I wanted to read more of Scottoline's books. They all looked intriguing, but I decided to download this one to my Kindle and started reading right away. I became so engrossed in the story that I began listening to it while driving (wish more Kindle books had the text to speech option!), and I soon found myself taking the long way home just to see what happened next. Would Bennie be killed by the young cop? Was Alice really her twin? Did Alice actually kill Valencia? What exactly was wrong with her mother, and what was the secret she was hiding? Along with the suspense were stories of love and "rightness" such as the scenes of Mary and her family. Then too, there were scenes of harshness, avarice, and pure meanness.

I thoroughly enjoyed the book and was amazed at the difference in Scottoline's "voice" when compared to the Empty Nest book. Very talented, this author can write about humor, love, vice, court scenes, and crime with equal ease. Her legal background is obvious, and I can well understand why some have dubbed her as the female John Grisham.

The book was an interesting read with a definite plot that was intriguing. It was hard to care about the main character because she admitted she was a murderer, but not in the case for which she was being tried. I was not that concerned whether or not she was proven guilty. The fact she and the trial attorney could be twins was very interesting and I will not spoil the outcome.

I've only read two of this authors books. Her characters are rather unique and quite enjoyable if you like some humor mixed in with the mystery. This book was a little more serious but both books I've read have an excellent story with interesting twists. I found the author depends on a good story without the gore and psycho mind that so many books know contain.
