Review
Raped Black Male: A Memoir by Kenneth Rogers Jr. was an interesting book. In his memoir, Rogers talks about many different things, such as getting raped at a young age, being homeless, and life in general. When I first chose to read Raped Black Male: A Memoir, I thought I was going to be in for some heavy emotional reading. The first chapter of Rogers' book goes along with the title and is very emotional. This is where he tells how he was raped by a family member. Once you get past that chapter, his stories become a little lighter and at times even funny. Rogers had me laughing out loud at the description of his father's farts. Roger also writes about why he dropped out of college and how he survived being homeless. I was actually surprised he became a teacher after dropping out.
In this book, Rogers also includes some of his short stories which are works of fiction. These are loosely based on things that have occurred in his life. I liked his story "Michael" the best. After reading this book, there is no doubt in my mind that he truly loves his wife. Overall, I thought that Raped Black Male: A Memoir was an interesting book. At times, Rogers bares his heart and other times he lets you peek between the cracks to see what went on in his life and the thoughts in his head. He does have a gift for writing because he kept me interested throughout the whole book.

Kenneth has been living and teaching in Baltimore City since 2010 with his wife, Sarah, and two daughters, Mirus and Amare. In that time he has taught 6-10th grade English in Baltimore, Maryland. Kenneth has earned a masters degree in education from Johns Hopkins School of Education, the number one ranked school of education in the country. Since growing up and moving from Peoria, Illinois he graduated from Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, Ohio in 2008 with a dual degree in Political Science and English, he has written and published five novels. Those six novels are: Thoughts in Italics, a book of short stories that range from speculative to science fiction; Writing in the Margins, a novel that intertwines the characters of Jack Mueller and John Rubaker that makes the reader question what is reality and fiction; Sequence, a dystopian science fiction novel telling the story of Andrea Remus and Thomas Charon through each memory they are forced to relive as they are downloaded in a computer known as the Pandora Complex to save the human race; The Diary of Oliver Lee, the first in a young adult trilogy that tells the story of Oliver Lee, his ability to “stream” stories from the minds of those around him, and his search for the first couple he ever “streamed”; Love and Fear, book two in the Liturian trilogy which tells the story of Kevin and his continued search for Oliver Lee and answers to his possible future and fate; Raped Black Male: A Memoir which tells Kenneth’s story of what it means to be a male rape survivor, overcoming stereotypes of what it means to be black, and male, and that men can’t be raped; Heroes, Villains, and Healing: A Guide for Male Survivors Using DC Superheroes and Villains which uses comic books and back research to help male survivors of child sexual abuse understand and heal from their childhood sexual trauma.

The building of these of these themes and the evolution of Rogers’ own soul kept me turning the pages more quickly than I should have. When you read this book, take your time and reflect. It’s worth it.
This book deals with a topic seldom talked about, but it doesn't do it in the way most "tell all" books do. Because of how Kenneth Rogers Jr. is and because of how he writes the book provides a real catharsis and understanding.
The author carefully scaffolds the dynamics that exist in a house where there is this haunting secret that is always there, ready to rear it's ugly head. There is relief found in the descriptions of normal childhood thoughts, wonderings, and antics as well as in the fictional stories based on real incidents in his life. These stories help to add depth to the nuclear family while illuminating the strength that it took to face the secret that was in the shadows around him.
Much of what makes you want to turn the page is the author's ability to create a sense of caring for what he is feeling and experiencing, but it's the nagging question of whether or not he's going to be okay. Kenneth experienced a long period of time when he remained silent, consumed with the feeling of doing something wrong, and feeling helpless. A helplessness that he communicates with amazing skill. I feel myself reading and remembering him focusing on his breathing and trying to stay calm. It's an overwhelming feeling of helplessness. As the author begins to find strength in family, his wife and daughters, therapy, and just practicing getting back up again, you feel the vulnerability and you admire the courage. A courage to give voice to the secret. A voice that not only helps the author begin to heal, and regain control, but helps the rest of us to think about giving a voice to the silence.
Through all the events of childhood and young adulthood, most would just quit or give in to self-destruction. But not my hero. He proves that even with events beyond imagination, he will triump. This is a testament to human determination and strength of character we do not see every day. The book is excellent and tells a tragic, beautiful story and in the end, I feel hope for him. Please enjoy.
