Raped Black Male tells my story of being homeless and struggling to overcome depression while coming to terms with being sexually assaulted by my sister at age eight. Beginning in my middle school years, the novel weaves its way through the '90s to present day, as the stress of exceeding expectations of what it means to be a black male and the crippling unspoken belief that says (without saying) - it's impossible for a man to be raped - has forced one mental breakdown after another, resulting in thoughts of suicide. This memoir is filled with depth, humor, and honesty about the reality and myth of what it means to be a black male (not all of us can handle a basketball or football), while explaining the burden and responsibility each assigned title has had on my life, the way I prepare my seventh grade students to enter the world, and the way my shattered thoughts have forced me to interact. Using original journal entries written during my early life, each page is inspirational and told from the heart. About the Author: Kenneth Rogers Jr.'s first book Thoughts in Italics is a book of short stories published in 2008. His first novel, Writing in Margins, focuses on mental health through a character able to manipulate events with whatever he writes in his journal. His second novel, Sequence, is science fiction and the winner of the Next Generation Indie Book Award and the NABE Pinnacle Achievement Award in science fiction. His latest book, The Diary of Oliver Lee, is the first in the Chronicles of the Last Liturian trilogy. He is the father of two girls and an inner city teacher of humanities in Baltimore, Maryland. Raped Black Male: A Memoir by Kenneth Rogers Jr. was an interesting book. In his memoir, Rogers talks about many different things, such as getting raped at a young age, being homeless, and life in general. When I first chose to read Raped Black Male: A Memoir, I thought I was going to be in for some heavy emotional reading. The first chapter of Rogers' book goes along with the title and is very emotional. This is where he tells how he was raped by a family member. Once you get past that chapter, his stories become a little lighter and at times even funny. Rogers had me laughing out loud at the description of his father's farts. Roger also writes about why he dropped out of college and how he survived being homeless. I was actually surprised he became a teacher after dropping out.

In this book, Rogers also includes some of his short stories which are works of fiction. These are loosely based on things that have occurred in his life. I liked his story "Michael" the best. After reading this book, there is no doubt in my mind that he truly loves his wife. Overall, I thought that Raped Black Male: A Memoir was an interesting book. At times, Rogers bares his heart and other times he lets you peek between the cracks to see what went on in his life and the thoughts in his head. He does have a gift for writing because he kept me interested throughout the whole book.

Kenneth has been living and teaching in Baltimore City since 2010 with his wife, Sarah, and two daughters, Mirus and Amare. In that time he has taught 6-10th grade English in Baltimore, Maryland. Kenneth has earned a masters degree in education from Johns Hopkins School of Education, the number one ranked school of education in the country. Since growing up and moving from Peoria, Illinois he graduated from Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, Ohio in 2008 with a dual degree in Political Science and English, he has written and published five novels. Those six novels are: Thoughts in Italics, a book of short stories that range from speculative to science fiction; Writing in the Margins, a novel that intertwines the characters of Jack Mueller and John Rubaker that makes the reader question what is reality and fiction; Sequence, a dystopian science fiction novel telling the story of Andrea Remus and Thomas Charon through each memory they are forced to relive as they are downloaded in a computer known as the Pandora Complex to save the human race; The Diary of Oliver Lee, the first in a young adult trilogy that tells the story of Oliver Lee, his ability to “stream” stories from the minds of those around him, and his search for the first couple he ever “streamed”; Love and Fear, book two in the Liturian trilogy which tells the story of Kevin and his continued search for Oliver Lee and answers to his possible future and fate; Raped Black Male: A Memoir which tells Kenneth’s story of what it means to be a male rape survivor, overcoming stereotypes of what it means to be black, and male, and that men can’t be raped; Heroes, Villains, and Healing: A Guide for Male Survivors Using DC Superheroes and Villains which uses comic books and back research to help male survivors of child sexual abuse understand and heal from their childhood sexual trauma.

This book stayed with me long after I finished it, and I have picked it up again several times to revisit specific chapters. I will always keep it in my library. In the beginning of Raped Black Male, Rogers tells a very difficult story from his youth, then uses the rest of the book to process the damage and heal, taking us along with him through his often painful and rocky passage into adulthood. He uses imagery and characters drawn from his own life, from his works of fiction, and from pop culture to examine issues of family, power, expectations, true strength, choice, mental health, love, boundaries, and growth.
The building of these of these themes and the evolution of Rogers’ own soul kept me turning the pages more quickly than I should have. When you read this book, take your time and reflect. It’s worth it.

Raped Black Male is more than a memoir of Rogers' sexual abuse by his sister. It weaves between fiction and nonfiction, each reenforcing the other. This is not a lurid book, but a straightforward telling of what happened to him and how he navigated the aftermath. The writing is excellent, especially the surreal and personal story "Needs."

This book deals with a topic seldom talked about, but it doesn't do it in the way most "tell all" books do. Because of how Kenneth Rogers Jr. is and because of how he writes the book provides a real catharsis and understanding.

When I read a memoir, I am often left with unanswered questions, or with the realization that while it was an interesting story, the impact on me is minimal. This memoir, not only struck a chord with some of my own difficult past, but left me feeling a sense of joy for the author. He has found the courage to give a voice to what he has experienced which not only helps him to move forward, but helps others to feel there is hope for healing and moving forward. The beginning, the careful setting of the stage, revealing the moments that haunt his mind at 4:00 in the morning, is difficult to read for those that find familiarity with the author's experiences.

The author carefully scaffolds the dynamics that exist in a house where there is this haunting secret that is always there, ready to rear it's ugly head. There is relief found in the descriptions of normal childhood thoughts, wonderings, and antics as well as in the fictional stories based on real incidents in his life. These stories help to add depth to the nuclear family while illuminating the strength that it took to face the secret that was in the shadows around him.

Much of what makes you want to turn the page is the author's ability to create a sense of caring for what he is feeling and experiencing, but it's the nagging question of whether or not he's going to be okay. Kenneth experienced a long period of time when he remained silent, consumed with the feeling of doing something wrong, and feeling helpless. A helplessness that he communicates with amazing skill. I feel myself reading and remembering him focusing on his breathing and trying to stay calm. It's an overwhelming feeling of helplessness. As the author begins to find strength in family, his wife and daughters, therapy, and just practicing getting back up again, you feel the vulnerability and you admire the courage. A courage to give voice to the secret. A voice that not only helps the author begin to heal, and regain control, but helps the rest of us to think about giving a voice to the silence.

Much respect to you for having the courage to disclose such personal info. I enjoyed. "Michael" was my favorite part of the book. That portion of the book helped me to realize things about my own immediate family. Thanks, Kenny.

This book says it all. It is a glimspe into the mind of a wonder, powerful man whose life was turned upside down and inside out but did better than anyone expected.
Through all the events of childhood and young adulthood, most would just quit or give in to self-destruction. But not my hero. He proves that even with events beyond imagination, he will triump. This is a testament to human determination and strength of character we do not see every day. The book is excellent and tells a tragic, beautiful story and in the end, I feel hope for him. Please enjoy.

Raped Black Male: A Memoir is an excellent book that many should read. Kenny Rogers writes in such an honest way and provides vivid details of the horrors of child rape. I was moved and brought to tears. It can be triggering for survivors, but I still highly recommend people read it. I believe this book will empower rape survivors of any gender to share their stories and begin the healing process. But this book is not just about rape. Kenny also provides well-written, thought provoking fiction writings and writes about his family problems, homelessness, deep life struggles, and what it means to be black to him and others. Kenny has overcome many challenges, and his true character shows throughout this book. We see a glimpse of how deeply Kenny wants to be, and is, a great father and husband. I personally have been inspired to be a better man because of this book. Thank you Kenny. Keep writing, teaching, and being a loving father and husband.

Never did I expect a memoir about such a difficult subject to be a book that I did not want to put down. Kenneth Rogers with his whole heart describes his journey from trusting child through his abuse to struggling teen and adult still coping with his past. Reading this book caused me to look at the values we all form about what sexual abuse is--Yes males can be raped. Anytime there is a difference in the ability to with full knowledge consent or when those people involved are not on the same level of maturity or power (i.e. workplace harassment) full consent is not given. The growth Kenny struggles through, while common for everyone is complicated by his abuse. That he becomes a teacher and inspires his students shows his great strength.
