The highly anticipated new novel from the New York Times bestselling author of The Clockmaker’s Daughter, a sweeping novel that begins with a shocking crime, the effects of which echo across continents and generations

Adelaide Hills, Christmas Eve, 1959: At the end of a scorching hot day, beside a creek on the grounds of a grand country house, a local man makes a terrible discovery. Police are called, and the small town of Tambilla becomes embroiled in one of the most baffling murder investigations in the history of South Australia.

Many years later and thousands of miles away, Jess is a journalist in search of a story. Having lived and worked in London for two decades, she now finds herself unemployed and struggling to make ends meet. A phone call out of nowhere summons her back to Sydney, where her beloved grandmother Nora, who raised Jess when her mother could not, has suffered a fall and is seriously ill in the hospital.

At Nora's house, Jess discovers a true crime book chronicling a long-buried police case: the Turner Family Tragedy of 1959. It is only when Jess skims through its pages that she finds a shocking connection between her own family and this notorious event – a mystery that has never been satisfactorily resolved.

An epic story that spans generations, Homecoming asks what we would do for those we love, how we protect the lies we tell, and what it means to come home. Above all, it is an intricate and spellbinding novel from one of the finest writers working today.

KATE MORTON is an award-winning, Sunday Times and New York Times bestselling author. Her novels - The House at Riverton, The Forgotten Garden, The Distant Hours, The Secret Keeper, The Lake House, The Clockmaker's Daughter and Homecoming - are published in over 45 countries, in 38 languages, and have all been number one bestsellers around the world.

Kate Morton grew up in the mountains of southeast Queensland and now lives with her family in London and Australia. She has degrees in dramatic art and English literature, and harboured dreams of joining the Royal Shakespeare Company until she realised that it was words she loved more than performing. Kate still feels a pang of longing each time she goes to the theatre and the house lights dim.

"I fell deeply in love with books as a child and believe that reading is freedom; that to read is to live a thousand lives in one; that fiction is a magical conversation between two people - you and me - in which our minds meet across time and space. I love books that conjure a world around me, bringing their characters and settings to life, so that the real world disappears and all that matters, from beginning to end, is turning one more page."

I absolutely love Kate Morton’s work, and this was no exception. I’ll admit that I guessed some of the key plot twists right off, but I was still very intrigued and eager to see how they all fit together.

Tragic, human, emotional.. it carries the familiar theme of moral complexity of her other novels, which I always find interesting. Regardless of where I fall in terms of my morals and worldview, I think it is interesting to consider the various perspectives and motives, in small and large ways, of the various characters.

I also love the dichotomy of tying up loose ends from the past and bringing the truth to light, all of which the reader is privy to, compared with the fact that the book always ends with some loose ends in the present, leaving us to wonder and speculate on their what happens next with the characters. The past is laid to rest and made right in most ways, and yet the present day will inevitably become the past, which prompts the question of whether the mysteries are fully laid to rest, or whether they continue with the characters carrying history’s mysteries with them.

I was giving my husband a rundown as I finished the novel, and made the joke that it’s a “proper mystery” - presented in a clean and approachable way, yet so complex and nuanced and disturbing when you recount details in short.

I highly recommend this to anyone who loves a good, rich story, with good character development, tantalizing unfolding of events, and a desire to be transported to another time and place.

A family drama set in 1959 and present times.

In 1959 a mother and her children are found dead just before New Year in the Australian outback. They look like they took a swim in their pond and then all spontaneously died. Did the mother commit suicide and take the children with her or did someone kill all of them or was it some sort of unintentional food poisoning? Also, added to the mystery, the baby was missing and never found.

Many years later, in the present, a woman living in London receives word that her beloved grandmother, who raised her, had an accident and is hospitalized in Sydney, Australia. She hops onto a plane immediately to see her grandmother.

Once in her childhood home, she begins to dig into how her grandmother was injured in the first place and finds a connection to a tragic incident at a house the family apparently owns in the outback which included the death of several of her family members. How does it all connect?

What I loved:
Fascinating story. Great characters. I loved the back and forth between the present and past. Loved the whole Aussie piece.

What I didn’t love:
I found it confusing at times as to who was who and how everyone was connected. I spent a lot of time wondering about the characters relationship with the woman from London’s mother and why things went badly between the mother and grandmother; and then the mother and daughter. The reader was subtly allowed to make their own conclusions late in the book after given additional information but it felt pretty late in the game for me. It made me reframe everything but, by that point, there had been so many revelations that I wasn’t sure I needed another one.

Overall
Good book. Definitely worth reading.

I loved Kate Morton's use of words to paint the picture. I always love long books, if they are good. At first the topic was sort of depressing, but I wanted to learn more about the mystery, and it kept me reading for 2 days. I thought I wanted it to be over, but loved the use of words, and expressions of emotions the author used. But then my sister,-in-law told me Kate's books are worth the wait . So I kept going, and I'm so glad I did. There were so many twists and turns I didn't see coming, and I pride myself in seeing where a plot is going. There were so many secrets to learn about, and it was exciting learning them, after the author did such a good job of educating you on all her characters involved in the book. I think it was a great book! If you find yourself wanting to jump ahead pages, dont. You need to read them all!

This was such a moving, hard, sad, delightful, moving story with rich landscapes and deep characters. I loved the way the story wove in and out and culminated in a satisfying ending. Hooray!!

Kate Morton is a wonderful writer, a great spinner of tales. For the first 250 pages I was mesmerized by the story she was telling, of a tragedy that happened to a family in 1959, discovered by a young woman related to that family in 2018. The tragedy was mysterious—how DID the family of a mother and her four children die, who was to blame. It took 250 pages to lay the incident out, again as with so many modern books, the going back and forth between 1959 and 2018, multiple voices telling the story. And there were still 275 pages to go! Much as I had enjoyed the book, and wanted to know what would happen, I couldn’t face another 275 pages. So I skipped to the final 50 pages for the solution.
It was a good ending and sometime in the future, when I can get the book again, I may read those pages that I skipped. I do think that Morton might have got away with writing a perfectly wonderful 350 page book and that’s why I gave it 3 stars. It’s worth reading though, the descriptions of Australia brought back memories of my own brief time there many years ago. It’s just that, at 552 pages, it’s quite a time commitment. Not easy when the library is only lending it out as a short lend.

Great storytelling but I must confess, the first 100-125 pages went a little slow for me but then that is laying the groundwork for the story. Every family has secrets and the Turner family is no different but the secrets contained within the words of the story are life altering and shocking. I don’t think I can say anything more of the story without giving something away. This book is definitely worth your time.

Along with Lucinda Riley, Kate Morton must be by far one of the best time slip writers . Her research is fantastic, she takes time to write a book not like some of the writers today who publish a book a month and her characters come to life, you either love them or hate them as with this book. I took an instant dislike to Nora who in my opinion was a nasty, self centered haridan who ruined the lives of a few people with her lies and secrets. Lots of plots pointing the finger at many people but as usual the ending was a surprise.
