This amazing book is a children's version of a true story about the Bathysphere, a spherical deep-sea vessel lowered into the ocean on a cable. It was designed in the late 1920s by engineer Otis Barton for use by naturalist William Beebe for studying wildlife in the depths of the ocean. The two men conducted dives together in the early 1930s setting a world record for the deepest dive to 3,028 feet in 1934. This book has received FIVE starred critical reviews and was named one of the top three non-fiction children's books of 2018.

"Otis and Will" ROCKS!! Barb Rosenstock, the author, has created an engaging story with details of Otis and Will's different childhood interests and adventures that would later lead to very effective teamwork for exploring the ocean depths. Also there is plenty of drama and suspense in the story of how the men met, how the Bathysphere was designed, and the risks they faced during their record-breaking expeditions. Together they accomplished something astounding and greatly advanced our knowledge of marine biology.

Katherine Roy's well-researched illustrations are simply gorgeous! Every page is filled with vivid, sometimes humorous, images that bring the story
to life. Her beautiful watercolor paintings capture the feelings and emotions of each character and underscore the drama, risks, and achievements. The inside covers of the book include educational illustrations with names of many undersea creatures discovered in the actual deep sea dives.

Any young person would love this fun, educational and inspiring book!

Otis and Will didn’t know each other, but had related interests in biology and the technology needed to do early deep dives. They became partners after Will wrote a letter to Otis every week for months asking to meet, and found a mutual connection to advocate for the meeting. I appreciate that the author shared this level of detail in how the partnership came about, as this seems more realistic a model for kids to think about. Otis and Will are also different ages - really from different generations - and the model of an intergenerational partnership is also unique in a children’s book. I enjoyed talking with my 9 and 7-year-olds about this partnership itself!

The true story of discovery is also gripping. Otis and Will dive deeper in the ocean than anyone ever has in a relatively homemade and untested metal ball. It sparks at one point and they have to carefully monitor the oxygen levels. Ultimately they do discover the deep, deep ocean - full of creatures never before seen by humans. There’s a full two-page fold out illustration of the creatures they discover against a black background. It’s stunning!

I recommend this for young explorers and kids interested in science. Best for grades 2-5.

Gorgeous picture book that's fun to read with your kids

My kids are 4.5 and 8 and we all really enjoyed this picture book. My older son loves deep sea creatures so this was right up his alley. The illustrations are down-right gorgeous. We have Katherine Roy's (the illustrator's) two other books (Neighborhood Sharks, and How to Be an Elephant) and this one is just as beautiful as those. When my kids and I read Otis and Will for the first time, we literally and audibly gasped as we opened the large gate fold pages because of how beautiful the illustration was. It was a dramatic way to show how vast and dark the deep sea is. The author keeps the story simple and interesting. I like the play with text when they went DOWN, DOWN, DOWN and then UP, UP, UP. Overall, I highly recommend this book. It's a very nice addition to your home library and fun to read to your kids.
