My favorite read in 2023…

Book cover of Pageboy: A Memoir

Jonathan T. Jefferson Why did I love this book?

One of my favorite memoirs due to the author’s unapologetic blatant honesty.

Through Pageboy, we learn about the mental and physical struggles Elliot endures, indications of being transgendered that manifested during childhood, familial psychological abuse, Hollywood stereotyping, and the love of his closest friends. This book took me beyond fandom. I now wish I was a contemporary of Page.

As a Queens kid, I would have enjoyed befriending him in Brooklyn. As someone who spent his summers on a northeast farm, and young-adult years in the wilds of Maine and beyond, providing comfort during his dark time in the Canadian wilderness would have been my pleasure.

Now, if I could say anything to Elliot, I would recognize his growing strength and say, “Please continue to share your talent.”

3 authors picked Pageboy as one of their favorite books, and they share why you should read it.

What is this book about?

Full of intimate stories, from chasing down secret love affairs to battling body image and struggling with familial strife, Pageboy is a love letter to the power of being seen. With this evocative and lyrical debut, Elliot Page captures the universal human experience of searching for ourselves and our place in this complicated world.

'Can I kiss you?' It was two months before the world premiere of Juno, and Elliot Page was in his first ever queer bar. The hot summer air hung heavy around him as he looked at her. And then it happened. In front of everyone. The…

My 2nd favorite read in 2023…

Book cover of Holly

Jonathan T. Jefferson Why did I love this book?

Holly Gibney has appeared in six Stephen King books; Mr. Mercedes, Finders Keepers, End of Watch, If It Bleeds, The Outsider, and now Holly.

She does not move objects with her mind, start fires with her anger, or appear as a spooky clown to fearful children. Holly possesses a knack for problem solving thanks to her intuitive powers of deduction. In essence, she is Stephen King’s Sherlock Holmes disguised as a woman on the spectrum who has struggled with mental illness.

Holly is not to be underestimated. She was the surprise heroine in Mr. Mercedes, and proves a fierce adversary to those who would do others harm. It will never see the light of day without Stephen King’s approval, but my first manuscript of fiction is based on his characters.

By Stephen King,

Why should I read it?

8 authors picked Holly as one of their favorite books, and they share why you should read it.

What is this book about?

Holly Gibney, one of Stephen King’s most compelling and ingeniously resourceful characters, returns in this thrilling novel to solve the gruesome truth behind multiple disappearances in a midwestern town.

“Sometimes the universe throws you a rope.” —BILL HODGES

Stephen King’s Holly marks the triumphant return of beloved King character Holly Gibney. Readers have witnessed Holly’s gradual transformation from a shy (but also brave and ethical) recluse in Mr. Mercedes to Bill Hodges’s partner in Finders Keepers to a full-fledged, smart, and occasionally tough private detective in The Outsider. In King’s new novel, Holly is on her own, and up against…

My 3rd favorite read in 2023…

Book cover of The Book of Dust: The Secret Commonwealth

Jonathan T. Jefferson Why did I love this book?

The His Dark Materials TV series was based on Philip Pullman’s trilogy of novels by the same name, and The Secret Commonwealth picks up seamlessly where the trilogy, and series, concluded.

Awaiting the reader is a duplicitous world fraught with danger where each human’s consciousness exists alongside them in animal form. What happens when people behave contrary to what their conscience suggests is experienced by the protagonist Lyra during her quest for independence, truth, and ultimately reunification with her soul.

This novel was entertaining and thought provoking throughout.

It is twenty years since the events of La Belle Sauvage: The Book of Dust Volume One unfolded and saw the baby Lyra Belacqua begin her life-changing journey.

It is almost ten years since readers left Lyra and the love of her young life, Will Parry, on a park bench in Oxford's Botanic Gardens at the end of the ground-breaking, bestselling His Dark Materials sequence.

Stories by Jonathan T. Jefferson

Imagine, if you will, that we are each a God presiding over our own universe of creations. What would your universe look like? Would dinosaur-like creatures roam on a planet alongside humanoids? Would evil-doers exist, or would love dominate over all? This is what fiction is all about. Sharing our godly imaginings with the world we know. Except, in this world, there are no limits.
