My favorite read in 2023…

Book cover of Jurassic Park

Paul Stuart Kemp Why did I love this book?

I really loved reading this in its original form. So used to the film, I found the novel jarring at first but grew to love it more than the film as there is so much more content, science, and character development.

I found the written word carried so much more depth and narrative, and the story just went on and on, way past the events of the film, and to be fair I hadn’t given Crichton enough merit for the amount of work he’d put into the original idea, and there is a lot of work here. Fabulous noel, and I will definitely be reading more of his books.

My 2nd favorite read in 2023…

Book cover of Fairy Tale

Paul Stuart Kemp Why did I love this book?

I don’t just want to pick this for the sake of it, but I found the first half of the book engrossing as it takes place in our world, and the second half quite dull in places as though the author was on unfamiliar territory with fantasy and just wanted it over with.

The fantasy otherworld I felt wasn’t handled anywhere near as well as Clive Barker would have done which, given King’s amazing ability of describing real scenes and people, became very apparent in his lack of ability to describe things that don’t exist. I enjoyed the book overall but just found the two worlds lacking in how they synchronised.

What is this book about?

A #1 New York Times Bestseller and New York Times Book Review Editors' Choice!

Legendary storyteller Stephen King goes into the deepest well of his imagination in this spellbinding novel about a seventeen-year-old boy who inherits the keys to a parallel world where good and evil are at war, and the stakes could not be higher—for that world or ours.

Charlie Reade looks like a regular high school kid, great at baseball and football, a decent student. But he carries a heavy load. His mom was killed in a hit-and-run accident when he was seven, and grief drove his dad…

My 3rd favorite read in 2023…

Book cover of For Whom the Bell Tolls

Paul Stuart Kemp Why did I love this book?

I loved the way Hemingway is able to describe scenes, characters, and emotions so effortlessly.

It is quite an old book now, so this has to be taken into account when reading it in a modern context, but as a writer I found it an amazing read which is why I bought it in the first place. It is the mark of a superlative writer when you find yourself engrossed in the story when you started out trying to dissect his prose and figure out just why he was so damned good.

Page after page of wonderful descriptions keep it fresh and visually attractive, where very real and very different characters drive the story forward.

Inspired by his experiences as a reporter during the Spanish Civil War, Ernest Hemingway's For Whom the Bell Tolls tells the story of Robert Jordan, an American volunteer in the International Brigades fighting to defend the Spanish Republic against Franco. After being ordered to work with guerrilla fighters to destroy a bridge, Jordan finds himself falling in love with a young Spanish woman and clashing with the guerrilla leader over the risks of their mission.
