Moe and Me is a great book for those who love the history of golf and want to look beyond just the game itself. Who also want to delve into the personalities who play it too, on an off the course. Lorne knew Moe Norman very well – unlike few did since Moe was not willing to interact with those outside his tiny circle – and so you get a great insight into the man. The best part is that the stories you get of his life journey are always surprising and often funny, while heartbreaking at the same time. You can’t help but fall in love with Moe the Schmoe after reading this book.

A great read about a very famous sports figure Phil Mickelson. I always enjoy books that take you beyond the facts and the known and go deeper to look at the man. This one does it. It is particularly of interest to me since Phil has been a major force in trying to create a competitive league (LIV) to challenge the PGA. Interestingly, it is a tale as old as time…it all comes down to money. And interestingly, one of the reasons Moe Norman was shunned from the PGA was because he didn’t fit into their plans regarding TV broadcasts, which were just starting to happen, where a pile of money to be made was at stake. Moe didn’t look or act the part like Phil did in his prime. As it often is in sports and many endeavors, money – sadly – trumps all.

I’ve been fascinated by the link between golf and the Eastern arts since I heard the great Jack Nicklaus say that golf is played with the feet. This immediately struck a chord with me as my background spans over thirty years of Tai Chi training and I have understood from this art that all movement comes from the ground upwards. I suspect more people saw the movie (starring Will Smith, Matt Damon, Charlize Theron and Jack Lemmon in his final role) than read the book by Steven Pressfield. Too bad, because the book’s pretty good.
It tells the entirely fictional tale of a 36-hole showdown match during the Depression between Bobby Jones, Walter Hagen, and a local hero named Rannulph Junuh and his caddie, Bagger Vance. Grantland Rice and O.B. Keeler are there (famous sportswriters in the 1920s), and, of course, there is a femme fatale. But there is an underlying respect and honor for the game, which makes this novel a keeper.

Bamberger is a terrific golf writer and what made me love this book is the fact that it’s a 30th-anniversary edition! Michael wrote this book in the early 1990s when golf—and the golf world—was in a far different place. Think about it: this was before Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson.
It is Michael’s own story and is one I found myself living through his words: giving up his job and his apartment, going on a European sojourn with his new wife to experience caddying, and meeting some of the world’s best players.
I had read this book before, and it enthralled me reading it once again.
