My favorite read in 2023…

Book cover of The Summer Skies

Jeannee Sacken Why did I love this book?

In her soaring novel, Jenny Colgan has me in the co-pilot’s seat right next to Morag MacIntyre while she’s flying her family’s small plane to deliver mail, supplies, and tourists to Scotland’s northernmost windswept islands.

The descriptions of the islands as seen from the air and on the ground are glorious and had me reliving my time in Scotland. I love strong female characters, especially when they save the day—and the plane—in the midst of a terrible storm and then muster the courage to send a betraying boyfriend on his way.

My 2nd favorite read in 2023…

Book cover of Foster

Jeannee Sacken Why did I love this book?

I heard so many plaudits about Claire Keegan’s Foster, and the critics are right. Sparely written and replete with unspoken secrets—despite the foster mother’s stern warning that there are no secrets in the house—this heartbreaking novella held me rapt from beginning to end.

In rural Ireland, a father takes his young daughter to stay with relatives on a farm while her mother gives birth to yet another child. Far from being traumatized, the girl finds the love and family warmth she’s always dreamed of—and blossoms. Having had a similar experience as a child, this story speaks to me on a primal level. I read it in one sitting. And then I read it again.

My 3rd favorite read in 2023…

Book cover of Playing It Safe: An Electra McDonnell Novel

Jeannee Sacken Why did I love this book?

The third book in Ashley Weaver’s new series, Playing It Safe features the fabulous safe-cracking Ellie McDonnell who is smart and brave and beautiful.

Set against the backdrop of World War II’s Battle of Britain, the characters' fear as the bombs shake the streets of London is palpable. Partnered with British intelligence officer Major Ramsey, Ellie has the brains and courage to sort out the Nazi counterfeiting ring that is supplying documents to spies operating in England.

What I particularly love about this series is the increasing attraction between Ellie and Ramsey, although each knows the other is off-limits. A wonderfully intelligent historical mystery with a fabulous undercurrent of romance. Exactly my kind of read!
