My favorite read in 2023…

Book cover of Yellowface

M.K. Williams Why did I love this book?

I simply could not put this book down. Junie’s actions were so cringeworthy; it was a trainwreck I could not tear my eyes away from.

Also, as an author, I love books about authors and publishing. A book about an author gone bad was fascinating—the discourse around representation and who can tell which stories were very thought-provoking.

As an author, I always want to do my best to include a diverse set of characters in my books; reading Yellowface, I had to think about how I can do this better.

My 2nd favorite read in 2023…

Book cover of Romantic Comedy

M.K. Williams Why did I love this book?

I haven’t read a book by Sittenfeld that I didn’t love. This book was no different.

I needed a lighthearted read between some dark material, and Romantic Comedy did not disappoint. The story was both an escape from reality and a harsh reminder of it. I always feel a little awkward when I put something about bodily functions in a book, in this story Sittenfeld reminded me that it is always relatable.

My 3rd favorite read in 2023…

Book cover of Counterfeit

M.K. Williams Why did I love this book?

I guess I like a book about women doing something wrong and really owning it, and this book fits that description.

It was so clever and the switch in the middle of the story really entertained me, pulled me in further. Because I've always been such a rule follower, I was drawn to Counterfeit to see what would make someone turn to a life of crime, even fashionable crime.

I love that this was really a story of two women helping each other, and the 'crime' itself was so fully explained and nuanced. Very believable which is something I always love in a good story.
