My name is Tim O’Leary and two of my books, Dick Cheney Shot Me in the Face–And Other Tales of Men in Pain and Men Behaving Badly, emanate from the minds of protagonists trying to do the right thing the wrong way or evil characters doing the wrong thing they believe to be right. I’m particularly drawn to those wonderful literary psychopaths that draw you in with compelling personalities, while reviling the reader with their heinous actions.
McCarthy’s writing is always brutal yet beautiful, and I think this is his best work.
Often, his characters are so chilling that they don’t seem quite human, with an almost sci-fi aura. The horrifying villain in this book is incredibly compelling, with an intelligence that transcends his robot-like demeanor with dark humor. That’s probably why he translated so well to the film version of this book.

Road to
Perdition takes place during the Great Depression. Like my book,
it concerns a man who betrays his Chicago Irish-American mob boss and is forced
to flee for his life (accompanied by his young son in this case), pursued by a
relentless killer sent by his former boss. Superficially, what appealed to me
was the Depression-era atmosphere that the author of Road to Perdition created.
On a deeper level, it appealed to me as a story of a man in a battle for the
soul of his son. The man, an enforcer for his gangland boss, considers his own
soul to be irredeemably lost because of the crimes he has committed, not only
survive but to thrive.

This is a portrait of Nebraska (and
Nebraskans) where most of my own book takes place. It’s also the state
where I went to high school. I like Hansen’s spare and precise writing style
because it perfectly fits the time and place, as well as the characters
themselves who are presented stripped of the conceits and pretensions. For me,
it’s a style, though different from McCarthy’s, that creates the illusion of
actual direct experience as opposed to something I happen to be reading about. His
story “Wickedness” creates a powerful image of winter on the Great Plains and
its effect on people.

I grew up in a small Montana town, so Watson’s
novel has a special meaning for me. It is a vivid portrayal of small-town life
on the Great Plains and takes place during the same time period as my own book. It tells of the corruption of a trusted official and its effect on

As an Expressionist, she champions the plight of the poor and oppressed, especially women and children. Working in the mediums of sculpture and drawing, Kollwitz is a master, or rather a mistress of the human form. A sculptor myself, I appreciate the depth of form in her figure drawing and her use of broad strokes to define planes.

Personally, I have no skill or passion for painting or photography—the gifts granted the characters in this book—but as I immersed myself in Bensley’s world, I began seeing the world as visual artists do. That was an unexpected bonus to an already compelling intergenerational story. As I hungrily turned pages, eager to discover what would happen to the characters next, I loved learning about art, the sexism of the art world, and the compelling need to create regardless of external validation.

I have been fascinated by women who are artists and activists, such as Ivy Bottini, Käthe Kollwitz and Peggy Guggenheim. (All subjects of plays I wrote). They are convicted, unique, champions of justice, diversity and inclusion.
Ms. Kollwitz is one of the most famous expressionistic German artists and was the first female to teach in a university setting. She was a pacifist, champion of the poor, a politically-active socialist. Under the Nazi regime, her work was labeled “Degenerate.” After learning about Ms. Kollwitz, I wrote a play about her entitled Censored.
There are 2.2 million people behind bars in the United States—more than any other country in the world —in greatly disproportionate demographic numbers. There are mandatory drug sentencing laws that put fathers and mothers, sometimes both, away for many years regardless of their actual direct involvement in a crime. I wrote this book because no matter how one feels about these laws, or these crimes, if 2.2 million adults are incarcerated, there are at least as many children without mothers or fathers. Having lost my mother to suicide there are many connections, stigma, shame, and the hardship of reconciling a mother’s love in spite of the events that took her away from me.
On the other end of the spectrum is a light and funny, extremely well-written, and poignant middle grade novel about a boy growing up with his mother inside prison walls. (Full disclosure, I cried at the end of the book.)
While it’s not realism, it brings attention to its readers, that the law is not perfect, and often the wrong people are in prison. The happy ending helps make this realization palpable for young readers, who nonetheless will get the message about criminal justice and being quick to judge.
